February 2011

From the Director

Hello Community Center,

Thanks for those of you who have missed me over the last few weeks. Contrary to popular belief, I haven't been on vacation in Hawaii.

I've actually spent the last 2 weeks in Congo as part of the PCC mission team. I am still trying to process all that I experienced in the place recently designated by the United Nations as the poorest country in the world.

I did find that people value community, whether it's in Redwood City or the Congo. I witnessed Congolese and foreign nationals making incredible sacrifices to help others and to develop healthy functioning communities.

One doesn't have to go away to Congo to help communities. Did you know that the Community Center offers multiple opportunities to help the Redwood City community?

For example, we have the PE Program that provides PE to over 1700 students and 10 schools who can't afford to pay for PE. We also have the Ascent Program that provides mentoring for at risk high school students in our local high schools. Through these programs, we are helping families less fortunate and dramatically improving our local community.

We have been blessed with an incredible community and resources here at the Center. Let me know if you'd like to learn more about how we can use what we've been given to help others in Redwood City and beyond.

See you at the Center,

Anthony Mejia

PCC Community Center Director

PCA Dolphin Swim Team News

South San Francisco C/B/A+ Meet: January 15-16th 2011

For many PCA swimmers this was their last opportunity to qualify for the Zone 1 North Championships, and for many of them they came away from the meet successful. Eleven PCA swimmers spend their weekend at Oceana High School's Brink Pool where every one of them achieved at least one best time. Callahan Growney (10) achieved a new Junior Olympic qualifying time in the 100 Backstroke and gained a new 'A' Time in the 50 Breaststroke. Justin Mills (9), Kyla Guinon (11) and Kelsey Lyons (12) also gained new 'A' Times at the meet, qualifying them for the Zone 1 North Championship Meet. Congratulations Dolphins!

Burlingame Distance Meet: January 22nd 2011

Ten PCA swimmers traveled to the Burlingame pool for the BAC short course distance meet this year, and many of them for the very first time! They competed in events such as the 500 Free, 400 IM, 200s of every stroke and even the 1650 Free. Mina Sealund (12) achieved an 'A' Time in her 200 Breaststroke; Kyla Guinon (11), Claire Scannell (11), Leslie Wasserman (11), Kyle Tarzon (11) and Justin Galla (12) posted best times in almost every event. Matej Sebo (14) qualified for Junior Olympics in the 200 Breaststroke, his first JO qualifying time ever! Congratulations to all who swam!

Zone 1 North Championships: January 29th - 30th 2011

Fourteen PCA swimmers braved the weather to swim in the Zone 1 North Championships last weekend. Held at the College of San Mateo's pool, PCA's swimmers swam fast and had fun even amidst the cold downpours and strong gusts of wind. Maya Gotthard (10) had an amazing meet, adding two more Junior Olympic qualifying times to her collection and swimming best times in all her events. Kaia Anderson (9) achieved her first ever Junior Olympic qualifying time in the 50 Breaststroke, while Caitlin Lyons (14), Callahan Growney (10), Isabelle Couch (10), Justin Mills (9) and Connor Holden (10) swam a handful of best times throughout the meet. Kyla Guinon (11), Claire Scannell (11), and Nikki Hsu (11) also swam best times in all of their events. Congratulations Dolphins!

Pacific Swimming Short Course Senior Meet: January 29th - 30th 2011

PCA's Gold Group swimmers attended the Pacific Swimming Short Course Senior Meet at Santa Clara last weekend. Through rain, wind and a lightening delay on Sunday, the Dolphins swam fast and posted best times all around. Megan Beach (17) swam a 2:09.38 in the 200 IM achieving a Pacific Recordable Time (PRT) and swimming a personal best by over a second. Stephanie Fong (17), Helena Larson (14), Elizabeth Staton (13), Alexa Strutner (17), Jamie Gaskin (14) and Bradley Jerome (14) added Far Western qualifying times to their list of best times throughout the meet. Kayla Bauhuas (17), Helena Larson (14), Elizabeth Staton (13), Timothy Gaskin (14), and Mark Ledbetter (14) all achieved Junior Olympic qualifying times, and Taylor Beach achieved her 'A' Time in the 100 Breaststroke. Coach Dave Knochenhauer was very pleased with the results, congratulating all swimmers on a very good meet. Goooo Dolphins!

ATTN:  Marvelous Masters, Fitness and Lap Swimmers

METER MANIA MONTH kicks off on February 1, 2011.

Similar to last month's FITNESS OLYMPICS,  there is a tote board and daily tracking of your progress.

Put your name on the board, record you daily total of meters that you swim, and try to swim as often and as far as possible during the entire month of February.

In past years, there have been over 140 swimmers in total that have participated.  The total collective miles approached 2900 I believe, and I am sure we can reach or exceed that total this year.

The tote board will be available to record your meters first thing Tuesday morning, so do not delay in getting your bodies wet and doing the wall to wall, back and forth thing as soon as possible.

As in past years, everyone will be a winner and will earn some very valuable prize for your efforts.

See you all at the pool!!!!!

Stay Fit!     Have Fun!     Get Wet!

FITNESS OLYMPICS at PCC

We had a good turn out at the Fitness Olympics this year.  As usual, the competition fierce, especially at the upper echelon of athleticism.

Though our champions from last year made the top 8, we have two new competitors who are long time PCCers entering the medal round. All three really separated themselves from the pack by over 40 points.  In the end, though,Lonnie Gee edges out 2nd place Debbie Grima by a mere 3points (you bet that was triple checked)! And the early morning diehard, Paul Flanniganscores Bronze.  Another fun bout worth mentioning is between our own staff, Diana Mariucci and  Glenn Miller. They duel it out each year.  Lastly, a special shoutout to our youngest, yet most dedicated competitor, Jessica K! Turning 13 in January, she worked out every single day of the Olympics, primarily as a PCA Dolphin swimmer. Way to not miss a day, Jessica.

All prize winners can claim their prize at the front desk.

Fitness Success Story

As you may or may not know, we have three outstanding personal trainers here at PCC. They work very hard to help their clients reach their fitness goals. The Newsletter will be highlighting some of these success from time to time - straight from the client's mouth. Personal training is a great opportunity to jump start a fitness regime, help come back from an injury or simply shed a few pounds. Learn a bit more about what you can do for yourself with one of our trainers.

My favorite thing about PCC is hands down....Monique Story.  I've had the pleasure of working out with Monique for over three years now.  Monique is the most caring, attentive, positive, professional and knowledgeable trainer that I've worked with.  She pushes me to be better and never stops caring about my results.  Through hectic work schedules, travel and health issues Monique always balance her schedule to be available for me.  She wants to see my success and good health (sometimes even more than I do  ).  She is continuously growing as a trainer and never stops learning all that she can about ways she can be more helpful to her clients.  Monique takes her work very seriously and is very good at making her clients feel important.  There have been many times that I've come to Monique with an achy back, knee or hip and by the time I leave I am feeling better.  In addition to being a great trainer, she is also a good healer.  She knows what to stretch or work on to remedy aches and pains.   Monique always gives her whole self to her client. In addition to this, she also wants to see all members do well.  If someone isn't doing a machine right, she takes the time to explain it to them so that they do not injury themselves.  She takes ownership and puts herself out there in an effort to make all things good.   Monique is down to earth and really takes to heart her client's goals into consideration.  She sets realistic expectations and works diligently to get her client there.  She knows how to push just the right amount and she is always supportive and involved.  It is a pleasure to work with Monique and she is certainly an asset to the PCC family.

Sincerely,

 Gina H
