Happy Fourth of July

This month we celebrate yet another birthday of our great country. I realize it's not Memorial Day, however, we should never forget those who have fought to keep this country independent. Would you join me as we salute those who have served? Let's offer up a word of gratitude, a word of encouragement, and even look for an opportunity to serve those who have served on our behalf. As a way to honor those who serve, please send to Dave Enderby, davee@peninsulacovenant.com,  a picture, in a jpeg format, of  that special individual, so we can post them on our lobby screen. Our very own Tim Speights, who was a lifeguard and front desk staff, will be deployed off to Afghanistan shortly.  Tim, we are praying for your safety.

How would you describe joy? It's a word that really summarizes a whole attitude about how we should live our lives. Most of you have learned that our summer theme is on JOY. The staff is reading a book out of the Bible called Philippians for our reference. For ten weeks we are considering one verse, summarized by one word, which focuses on an aspect of joy. I'd encourage you to speak with our staff members further if you have questions or are wanting more joy in your life.

Please welcome the two summer interns who will be helping out around PCC. They are Christina Congi and Robin Benedict. Christina will be helping out the tennis camp program and Robin will be split between the Bistro and the Front Desk. Give them both a hardy PCC welcome when you see them. I know they would love to meet you.

Did you see that a Marriage workshop is coming to our club? No matter how long you've been married, this workshop is for you. It's for couples only, beginning Saturday, July 17 and continuing through August 28. This is a workshop that is focused solely on your marriage, and is not a group activity. Dinner will be served each night, and childcare is available on our premises. Think of this as a date night with your spouse! Topics are:  communication, conflict, forgiveness, sex, emotions, love, and family of origin. The cost per couple is $140 and $175 if you need childcare - a sweet deal! Last Friday, June 25, PCC USTA teams celebrated their season and honored the captains and co-captains of each of our six teams.  It was a really enjoyable evening at the beautiful setting of Emerald Lake Country Club. Congratulations to all of our Captains, Co-Captains, and team members on a great season:  Eric Morley & Brian McRae (4.5), Marc Manuel (4.0), Don Rust & Perry Thorndyke (3.5), Diane Rogers & Gina Kelley (3.5 1), Karen Spini (3.5 2) and Lisa McKenna (3.0). A very special thank you to our own 3.5 player, Peter Keller, who, along with his band The Wildwood Brothers, provided the entertainment that evening. Thanks to Carl Touhey who is on the PCC Tennis Committee and provided the venue for us at the "lake" at no charge.  Also thank you to the PCC Tennis Committee for their help in putting on a great event.

Pool Temperature Goal

During the summer months, our pool draws a lot of attention from a wide variety of members. From the competitive Masters swimmer to the 3-year old blowing bubbles for the first time. With that in mind, we do our best to hit the temperature goal of 82 degrees to accommodate the most people. We take measures to cool the pool on our hotter days in an effort to keep it around 82. Occasionally when heat waves hit us it's difficult to maintain that middle ground temperature but know that we are aware of your desires for a comfortable swim.

The pool stays open!

Good job to all you care givers of the diaper-clad! Please keep up your resolute determination to take your children to the rest room at regular intervals. As you may know, the two pools' filtration systems are connected, so if there is an accident in one, we must close the other one. Hence the critical response time by you or staff to hit the red button on the building adjacent to the baby pool when an accident is discovered.

Marvelous Masters Making Moves

Summer is in full swing, and the PCA Masters Swimmers are making the most out of every opportunity.  Almost every weekend there is an opportunity to swim in either a pool meet, the lakes, bays, and oceans that surround this beautiful San Francisco Peninsula.  We are all very blessed indeed to live, work, and be in community in truly one the best places on earth.

Extreme sports seem to have blossomed as of late, with marathons, ultra marathons, long distance swims, ironman triathlons, century bike rides and beyond,  and other grueling events that test the endurance and will of each of  the participants.  Our PCA Masters Community has a number of these folks that seem to thrive on this type of activity.

In the PCA Masters Community, one such event is on the horizon, as 42 swimmers will be participating in the 34th Annual Trans Tahoe Invitational Swim on July 17th.  PCA Masters has 7 teams of six people each, swimming across Lake Tahoe from Sand Harbor, Nevada to Lake Forest, CA,  just above Tahoe City.  What makes this extreme, no wetsuits are allowed in the event, and the water temp this year will likely be in the high 50's to low 60's.  Hopefully the latter.  With the elevation of 6000ft at lake level, this event challenges all participants significantly.   It is a relay, so swimmers alternate their swims across the lake.  There is sufficient time to warm the core before having to swim your turn again.  The scope of the event may be seen at the Community Center, with the names of the swimmers on display on the wall outside the Weight Room.  You may view a slide show on our website, www.pcamasters.com of last years event, to get an idea first hand.

Happy Summer to all, and there is always room in the pool to:

Stay Fit!          Have Fun!          Get Wet!

Coach Mike, PCA Masters
