April 2010

                                                                                                           Happy Easter
From the Director

Have you noticed, we are already well into 2010! I hope that doesn't surprise you, but rather motivate you in some way. Time will just slip away from us unless we decide to make a change. That thought struck me a month ago at a dinner party with some neighbors of ours. My friend asked me if I'd be up for doing a triathlon with him - can you believe that, what nerve.  I thought for a moment, remembering that I used to do them but took a break for a while ('decided' - aka, 'got unmotivated') - for five years.  I realized at that moment that the difference right then and there was my lack of motivation; and my friend was offering just what I needed - MOTIVATION.  So, I agreed to do a sprint triathlon later this summer with him. I ask you, what is going to motivate you? Our qualified staff is here to help you get to your next fitness level - let US help motivate YOU.

Most of you know that we just completed our Upward Basketball Program for kids last month. It was quite the treat to see all 300 kids and their parents sitting in the church sanctuary for the awards celebration, grouped by their individual teams.  We recognized a couple of people who volunteer to make the program run super efficiently.  They were Lisa Tyndall and Missy Goode. A huge and awesome thank you to the two of you! We then had a message and a magic show for everyone's entertainment; but the best part was learning that a number of the players had their hearts touched by Jesus.  This next week is all about changing your heart, too.  Take a moment and look beyond the eggs, bunnies and baskets and ask yourself - "what's the real meaning of Easter?"   It'll change your heart, too.

The final Module for our PE Program will start April 12, and instead of basketball, we will be teaching ultimate Frisbee.  We determined that these same schools (Hawes, Taft and Fair Oaks) are where the next Beautiful Day will be held on April 24. The coaches are planning on starting an ultimate game with the kids as part of the event that day. The parents should get a kick out of watching the kids play a new kind of soccer.

One more thing, our Center was recognized by the Redwood City School Board a second time because of the PE Program and it's valuable contribution to RWC schools. Thank you coaches for all your efforts toward the success of this program.

Some of you would like to know that the church, across the bridge, is holding a marriage seminar called, "Marriage Matters".  Mari and I hope to see you there. The dates, location and topics are:

  • Sunday 4/11, 9:15AM, Room 22C: Connecting, Not Colliding
  • Sunday, 4/18, 9:15AM, Room 22C: Creating Steadfast Sexual Intimacy
  • Sunday, 4/25, 9:15AM, Room 22C: Repairing Sexual Intimacy

I love serving with you,

Dan Cornelius, Interim Director

NEW Policy - trial run

Parent/Child Weight Room Contract

Peninsula Community Center is extending a special privilege to you by allowing a child under 16 years of age to work out in the PCC weight room.  PCC wants to encourage both family and exercise. However, the following requirements must be adhered to for the privilege to continue.

Ø  The parent must be exercising directly with the child at ALL times. For example: alternating turns on the SAME weight equipment, when using cardio machines parent and child will be adjacent to one another (ie. side by side, front to back, or diagonal). Under no circumstances are the child and adult to be in separate areas.

Ø  The child must defer to other adult members waiting for equipment.  NOTE: If this occurs with a cardio piece, the parent may have to relinquish usage of their own machine to maintain proximity to child.

Ø  Parent and child must check-in together at front desk, signing Parent/Child sheet, then receive and wear wrist band. Child must wear wrist band visibly to other members and staff for entire stay in weight room.

Ø  Parent must ensure child uses equipment in a proper and safe manner (eg. no swinging or hanging from machines or letting weights drop, etc.)

Ø  Children under 16 are still NOT Permitted in the adult locker rooms

Welcome Steve

Please welcome Steve Stokes to the PCC family.  He will be joining us to provide leadership and help in the non-administrative hours (evenings and weekends)  of the center as a supervising caretaker.

His duties will include regular patrols of the campus as well as regularly interfacing with the membership, and staff, light maintenance projects and help with the policy enforcement of the center.

Steve comes with a background in customer service as an entrepreneur in the sports industry and has been an active member at Peninsula Covenant Church for many years and strong believer in God's mission for the center.  We welcome this opportunity to have him involved as a member of the team.

BREAST CANCER AWARENSS WEEKEND WRAP-UP

Thanks to all of you who participated in our 3rd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend on March 5-7. With our Family Pasta Night, Tennis Exhibition Match, Ladies Round Robin Doubles Tourney, and auction sales we were able to raise over $5,800 for the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" event!

Here were our winners:

8.5/9.0             Linda Dunn/Cathy Chakos (1st) and Sandy Bristow/Christine Forter (2nd)

8.0                   Dawn Bokman/Kendyl Volk (1st) and Mary Kenney/Dianna Loy (2nd)

7.5/8.0             Lynn Presley/Sandy Jackson (1st) and Joy Ebbers/Melanie Hibbs (2nd)

7.0                   Rose Janisch/Debbie Grady (1st) and Kathleen Cammarata/Scarlett Wood (2nd)

6.0/6.5             Bev Joyce/Chantelle Ellis (1st) and Karen Spini/Mary Ann Nahmens (2nd)

Here are some words from our Erin Stockford, our Tournament Coordinator:

"I think we had about 60 ladies out this year, so we added an extra day, making this year's overall event a 3 day event.   On Friday, March 5th we kicked off the event with a tennis exhibition match (Coach Paco & Coach José vs. Coach Sid and Coach Alex - Paco & José won 8-5) and a pasta dinner.  I believe we had nearly 80+ people turn out for this event!  A big thanks to all that came out (it was quite chilly) and a very special thank you to Dana Hart and the CARVERY CATERING COMPANY for donating the pasta and bread for our FUN event!

On Saturday and Sunday, I don't know how we managed to keep the projected rain away!  Unbelievable!  Our raffle/auction format (overall) seemed to be the way to go this year.  Thank you to all who donated items for this event, especially Sharon Marson for her donation of the Carmel Cottage for a week and the Johnson family for their Carmel home!  These were certainly big draws for the raffle!

In this tough economic time, I also want to thank Bev Joyce with the Women's Care and Terri Mead for not only playing in the tournament but also contributing at a sponsor level!   Also, Erik's Deli Cafe in Redwood City EACH YEAR happily takes care of our tournament lunch by providing sandwiches, chips and cookies!  We all LOVE Erik's Deli Sandwiches!!

My list of thanks would probably never end (donors, American Cancer Society reps, jewelry vendors Kathy and Gail, Sid, Cheryl, front desk, etc.), but without you, the players, this event wouldn't take place and it wouldn't be so much fun, so THANK YOU again!

          With Gratitude, Erin Stockford

USTA ADULT LEAGUES

Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we start another busy and exciting USTA Adult League season. This year PCC has 6 teams so we have a lot of our members involved... some for the very first time! The teams will be using courts 3 & 4 for weeknight practices (and #1 on Wed), and courts 1, 2 & 3 for Home Matches, which will likely be on their practice night or a weekend. We have posted the Home Match schedule on the decks, or you can click here for that info as well. http://www.peninsulacommunitycenter.com/pdf/USTA_Court_Schedule.pdf

Special Fitness Spotlight Kelley Rhoads from Guadalajara

Hey PCC! I miss you! I taught Group Power at PCC for a couple years, but in August 2009 I moved to Guadalajara, Mexico to teach Bible at a small K-12 school to 7th and 9th grade students. It is a privilege to work in Mexico and to be part of what God is doing there. My favorite part of my experiences there has been partnering with a team that is developing God's family in an extremely under-resourced area in the outskirts of the city. There is tremendous need in this area and we need help with what we are doing! But amidst the need I see the love and grace of God more tangibly than ever, transforming lives and doing miracles.

Fitness looks different in Mexico, but it is still a priority. I ran a half-marathon in October in the city center with some friends, and I still find time to do Group Power on my own. I take spin classes at a gym near my house and always think of PCC when I have a chance to work out or take a class! I was so grateful to be back for the recent Group Power launch! Enjoy the new tracks and blessings to all in this wonderful community! :)

Fitness Olympics Results

We had quite a turn out at the Fitness Olympics this year.  The competition fierce, especially at the upper echelon of athleticism.

It was a real nail-biter for Gold as these two Olympiads really separated themselves from the pack by over 80 points! In the end, though,Teresa Longedges out 2nd place Ken Wisner by a mere 19 points! And Debbie Yandell secures Bronze.  Another close bout worth mentioning is the near dead tie of two of our own staff, Diana Mariucci and  Glenn Miller. Congrats to Diana for her brilliant hot tub strategy.  All prize winners can claim their prize at the front desk.
