Summer is certainly here.  That can only mean one thing: GBCA Rum Races.  As many of you know, it's the best way to beat the heat and enjoy all that Galveston Bay has to offer.  Sun, fun, rum all for free.  If the past Icicle Series was any indication, there are going to be a lot of boats participating in the Rum Races this year.

Next week, GBCA will offer the Introduction to Sailboat Racing Seminar on May 29th. Maybe you know someone with an untapped desire to go sailboat racing but is not sure where to start? It could be that neighbor a few slips down that really should have their boat out more often.  Now is your chance to introduce them to our fine sport and come out to play. The format is simple: A basic chalk talk in the morning, pizza in the afternoon, and a Rum Race that evening.  Last year the program was a success bringing in several new faces to the clubhouse and new boats on the bay.  The first 30 attendees will also get a freebie to keep and cherish, but we're keeping that part a surprise.

Speaking of goodies, look for more GBCA merchandise soon.  Tumblers, burgees and shirts are on order so you can sport the club colors.

July brings Texas Race Week. The battle will be on for the coveted Texas Navy Cup.  Be sure to block some vacation days on July 22-24 and come down to Galveston for day racing in the gulf.  After each day of racing, we'll spend the evenings at the cabana and relax by the pool.

Lastly, the upcoming Regata de Amigos is the talk of the town.  The plans are set, the tall ships are coming and GBCA will be right in the middle of the once in a lifetime festivities. It promises to be an epic time in Mexico!

 J/22 CIRCUIT REGATTA NUMBER 3

On May 1st and 2nd, Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club hosted the 3rd of seven Southwest Circuit Regattas.  The Regatta was held in conjunction with the Dallas Leukemia Cup.  Galveston Bay skippers that participated were Ruthie Lambert on "Outta Sight", Chris Morlan on "Tilt" and myself on "The Skank".

The weather was terrific!  Winds were 10 to 15 mph and the skies were sunny.   The Southwest Circuit is known for its' depth in talent and the talent showed up.  The winds were shifting some and the lead changed several times in most of the races making for very fun & exciting racing.

DCYC is a great host and this event was no exception.  We had kegs of beer at registration and every day after racing, free Painkillers courtesy of Mt. Gay Rum on Saturday, dinner catered by Olive Garden and make your own sandwich buffet for lunches.  Over the 3 day event, they had five bands that entertained us.  The big tent with stage and dance floor aids in the fun one can have after a few adult beverages.

This is a fantastic event and a "must attend" for me and my crew.  If you get the opportunity, make plans to attend this event next year.  Results posted at http://j22southwest.org/pages/results.html   You may have to click on the link to DCYC.
