2010 Regata de Amigos XXII

Safety Seminar for all Offshore Sailors

Lakewood Yacht Club and Galveston Bay Cruising Association announce the Safety Seminar for the 22nd bi-annual race from Galveston to Veracruz, Mexico starting June 18th.  This seminar is scheduled for Saturday May 8th, starting at 9:00am, in the LYC Ballroom.  Topics include boat preparation, first aid, navigation and safety procedures.  Lunch will be served during this six-hour presentation and it is open to all area sailors at no charge.

Of particular interest this year will be a presentation by Steven Conway, recapping lessons learned by the surviving crew of Cynthia Woods.  As everyone knows, the Texas A&M boat suffered a catastrophic keel failure early in the 2008 race to Veracruz.  Steven was one of two senior officers aboard the boat that ill-fated night and is credited with keeping the crew together until their rescue.  Roger Stone gave his life saving young crewmen during this capsizing and will be honored this year with the establishment of a new memorial trophy for the event.

A complete agenda for the Seminar can be found, along with all other information on the Regatta, at the website:  www.veracruzregatta.com   This year the regatta features the celebration of 200 years of Mexican independence as well as 500 years since the founding of the port of Veracruz by Spanish Conquistadors.  Concurrent with our regatta is a tall ship rendezvous with national tall ships from Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Spain, Venezuela and last but not least, the USCG "Eagle".  These ships arrive in Veracruz on June 23rd as our regatta fleet begins finishing.  Veracruz is the last stop for the tall ships that are currently underway, having circumnavigated South America with stops in virtually every major port on the Continent.  Our regatta fleet will be moored right next to the Eagle and in between four other tall ships, in a very protected part of the harbor.  This promises to be a once in a lifetime spectacle.
