From the Commodore
by Chris Kelley
The season is off to a great start. January provided us with a wide variety of racing conditions in one of the coldest Icicle series of memory. Despite the weather, one of the Icicle races had well over 45 boats. It was a spectacular sight to see so many boats so early in the season. It also made for one of the most exciting and close finishes in recent memory. Part of the success of this year's Icicle is a direct result of the efforts of Past Commodore Kevin Box. He gets much of the credit for putting the Cruising Class concept into reality. The result is new boats are on the water, and new faces are in the clubhouse. If you enjoyed the Icicle Series (or not a big fan of the cold weather) you'll love the nearly identical summer Rum Race series starting at the end of May.
Of course, you don't have to wait for the heat of summer to get out racing again. The GBCA Frostbite Regatta is coming up February 20th and 21st. It's time to grab your foul weather gear and enjoy two days of great racing on Galveston Bay.
Also, one of our more unique and shorthanded events, 'The Conundrum' will once again be held on Galveston Bay, March 13th. It's three fixed marks, in any order. Register for both of these events at http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubs/gbca.html.
I am proud to announce we're upgrading/replacing some the more ragged RC gear that has served us well over the years. The purchase was made possible because of our strong membership base, and volunteers who believe in the GBCA concept of fun, rum and racing for over 60 years now. Would you like to be a GBCA member? Click here.
Looking ahead, February is a time to celebrate. The Commodores Ball is coming soon, February 27th There is still plenty of time to sign up. Kathyln Bez and her team has been working hard to put together a nice evening of entertainment, food and fun. A reminder that you don't have to be GBCA member to participate and everyone is invited. Come out and enjoy the evening. Sign up at http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubs/gbca.html
2010 is the return of the Regata de Amigos race from Galveston to Veracruz. Our friends at Higgins Smythe and Hood have renewed their support of the joint Lakewood Yacht Club and GBCA event. The 22nd running promises to be spectacular. The start date has been moved to the June 18th to correspond with the arrival of most of the world's tall ships for the Vela Sud America 2010. The finish line will also be the last stop on a tall ship tour that will help celebrate 500 years of Veracruz. The USCG ship Eagle is scheduled to be there along with at least a dozen other tall ships. Stay tuned to http://www.veracruzregatta.com/ for more details
Many of you have been watching the 33rd Americas Cup. After many delays, it was quite spectacular to finally see these technological wonders fly thru the water at triple the wind speed. Despite the 'wow!' factor of the current ships, I hope they return to some variation of the old fleet and match racing where more competitors can earn the right to challenge. Time will tell if someday we'll be able to call our local sail maker and upgrade the old canvas to a computer controlled carbon fiber wing.
Finally, it's an honor and privilege to serve as the GBCA Commodore in 2010. There are many others that really make it all happen, so all credit needs to go to the group of great volunteers and board members who make GBCA what it is today. See you on the water!

ROGER STONE PERPETUAL TROPHY FUNDRAISER - GBCA QUILT RAFFLE
by Kathy Rodgers
Preparations are underway for the 22nd Regata de Amigos race to Veracruz. The Race Committee met and decided that a perpetual trophy in memory of Roger Stone should be gifted this year. As many of you know, Roger Stone courageously gave up his life by saving other crew members during the 2008 Regata de Amigos race. It was a tragedy that we all felt across the sailing community. In order to raise funds to design and purchase a new perpetual trophy GBCA will be conducting a quilt raffle.
The GBCA picture quilt is a one-of-kind design that will look great in your boat or in your home. The designer used bamboo batting which is a retardant to molding. It is machine washable and dryer safe. (Winner will receive additional note from designer.)
The sale of raffle tickets will begin this weekend at the Frostbite Regatta Post Party on Saturday. Tickets are $20/each or six for $100. REMEMBER, money raised is going towards a perpetual trophy in the honor of Roger Stone. Ticket sales will also be available at the GBCA Commodore's Ball. The quilt will be raffled off at the GBCA Commodore's Ball on February 27th. We hope you will join us that night, but if not (due to other life threatening conflicts) you do not need to be present to win.
Please stop by the raffle table this weekend and purchase some tickets. I know I will!

NEW RACE GEAR FOR 2010
We have all heard the saying: "You need the right tools for the job". We're really pleased to announce that GBCA made a significant purchase of approximately $2500 of new race committee gear for the 2010 season.
It has been about three years since the last big GBCA race committee purchase. Some of the old gear was found to be on it's last legs, and everything from tetrahedrons, blowers, flags, and ground tackle were inspected. Other more minute details like zip ties, horns, whistles and surprisingly lengthy list of other necessary items we're accounted for. Even some of the old signal flags got a much needed trip to the wash machine, and several came out looking nearly new.
In addition, the gear is now consolidated in such a way that each race committee boat can now "grab and go". In other words, each boat should have all the gear they'll need in one tidy duffle bag.
The end result is GBCA once again has the capability to run two lines, including course changes.
A huge thanks to new fleet captain, Leigh Ann Hawboldt and Brian Hawboldt for volunteering to make this happen.
Also, a thanks goes to all the GBCA members, this purchase would not be possible without your continued support.

XXII Regata de Amigos Spectacular
Gary Anderson, Lakewood Yacht Club's Regatta Chairman has announced the starting date for the 22nd running of the bi-annual race from Galveston to Veracruz, Mexico. This event, which is jointly organized by GBCA and LYC has become one of the major international yacht races in the Western Gulf of Mexico. The Regatta attracts attention and interest throughout the Gulf Coast. Racers and cruisers will start on Friday, June 18th from Galveston and begin arriving in Veracruz about Wednesday, June 23rd. The boats will all carry tracking transponders. This turns the race into a spectator sport for friends and family, who can follow the progress on the tracking website. In addition to providing keen competition over a 630-mile course, it affords sailors and their families an opportunity to enjoy Mexico's finest hospitality and to visit the rare and wonderful Mayan antiquities located in the State of Veracruz.
Kevin Box, GBCA's regatta co-chairman and Principal Race Officer notes that this year's regatta is very special. As the regatta boats arrive in Veracruz they will be greeted in the harbor by the spectacle of an international rendezvous in Veracruz of tall ships from twelve countries; Velas Sudamerica 2010. Added to this will be the celebration by the City of Veracruz of the 500th anniversary since its founding by Corts. Veracruz has the distinction of being the first such Spanish settlement in North America.
Jeremy Hood, principal of HSH Yacht Sales, has signed on as the major sponsor of this year's regatta. This is particularly appropriate in that Jeremy is a noted sailor, having single-handed the Atlantic and the Clear Lake area's most prominent educator and broker.
The regatta this year promises to attract a particularly large number of boats. Racers and cruisers are encouraged to enter early as mooring in the Veracruz may be limited due to the closure of the commercial harbor to accommodate the tall ships and regatta participants. Complete information on the Regatta can be found at: www.veracruzregatta.com or by contacting Gary Anderson or Kevin Box.

Report from Veracruz 2008
Or
What I did on My Summer Vacation
How was it out There?
All boats agreed that it was rough for the first 24 hours. The common sentiment was something like "anyone that says they weren't queasy the first day is a (insert your favorite adjective) liar!" It was fairly typical as far as the general wind patterns. Boats that held high up on the rhumb line were rewarded later. Those venturing close to shore too early were treated to a "great circle route" with a combination of doldrums and thunderstorms. The last boat finished Thursday afternoon, making the average elapsed time about a day less than the 2006 race. Most crews looked to be in good shape for what they'd just been through. The old saying about how "waterline rules" seems to be true at least where comfort is concerned.....
