BBVA COMPASS PERFORMANCE CUP REGATTA RETURNS IN 2009 FOR ITS 25TH YEAR
On the weekend of Saturday, October 17th, 2009 the Galveston Bay Cruising Association will hold the 25th annual BBVA Compass Performance Cup Regatta on Galveston Bay. Yachts in several different classes and three separate fleets will converge on the waters off Seabrook and Kemah for the biggest race of the fall racing season. The overall winners in the One-Design, PHRF Spinnaker and PHRF Non-Spinnaker fleets will see their names join those of past winners on the crystal BBVA Compass Trophy.
This year marks the return of the BBVA Compass Performance Cup Regatta after Hurricane Ike ravaged the Galveston Bay area last year postponing all racing events until boat owners and shipyards could recover. BBVA Compass and the Galveston Bay Cruising Association are excited for the return of this regatta.
As always, a full complement of shore side events will await racing crews along the Clear Creek Channel connecting Clear Lake and Galveston Bay, including parties Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Saturday evening's social event will be on Jennings Island at the former Sunset Grille location. The party will include live music, food and drinks from Treaty Oak Rum, a local Texas distillery.
Participating boats will range in size from 22 feet to over 40 feet and will include several One-Design classes such as J 22's and J 80's, in addition to the highly competitive handicap racing fleets. The BBVA Compass Performance Cup Regatta is one week before the J80 North Americans being held right here in Houston, Texas. J80 sailors from all over Texas will use the BBVA Compass Performance Cup Regatta as a warm up competition for the North Americans. |

TREATY OAK RUM JOINS US AT THE SATURDAY NIGHT POST-RACE PARTY
Mojito's and Dark and Stormy's will be served on Saturday night Thanks to Treaty Oak Rum who will be joining us from Austin, Texas!
Treay Oak Rum begins with molasses from the last operating sugar mill in Texas.
The rum is drawn slowly from stills, giving plenty of time for the product to increase its quality and purity. The product is blended with filtered Hill Country water, and then double filtered through activated carbon.
The result of these processes is Treaty Oak Platinum Rum - a beverage designed to compete with other top rums and vodkas alike. While the overall flavor is smooth and subtle, hints of citrus, vanilla and nutmeg may be found on the finish.
It is perfect in traditional rum cocktails, excellent in drinks usually reserved for vodkas and superb served on its own. So, sit back, relax and enjoy a glass of Treaty Oak Platinum Rum, a rum truly made in the spirit of Texas...

J 80 SAILORS - BBVA COMPASS PERFORMANCE CUP REGATTA IS ONE WEEK BEFORE THE NORTH AMERICAN'S
J80 Sailors!!
GBCA is hosting the BBVA Compass Regatta on October 17 and 18. This is ONE WEEK prior to the NA's.
This is a perfect opportunity to warm up your boat, your crew and start to understand the wind patterns of Galveston Bay.
Now -- here is the important part....
We have 12 J 80's signed up for the BBVA Compass Regatta so far. We should be able to run a separate line for you and give you as many races as you prefer or can handle to tune up for the North Americans on October 23 and 24.
This is honestly the best time to be sailing in Texas and what a better way to warm up than racing in a Performance Cup Regatta one weekend before the big show.
Spread the word to other J80 Sailors who are making the trip for the NA's. Come a week early! GBCA, it's worth it!

2007 AND 2008 TEXAS SINGER/ SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR
ROBERT FRITH
TO PERFORM AT THE SATURDAY NIGHT POST RACE PARTY

Singer-songwriter Robert Frith has earned a great deal of critical acclaim regarding his outstanding original music and electrifying stage shows including being named back-to-back the 2007 AND 2008 Texas Singer/Songwriter of the Year as well as nominations for Texas Music Awards Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and Song of the Year. Winning the prestigious Wildflower! Arts and Music Festival's Singer/Songwriter Competition, finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival's "New Folk" event.
Utilizing a style best described as a mix of equal parts Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Al Green, Robert and his full band have long been regarded as the most popular music act in Southeast Texas because of their consistently strong drawing power and wide market appeal. They have headlined several major music events on the Texas Gulf Coast, including the annual Janis Joplin Memorial concerts and the Gulf Coast Jam in Robert's hometown of Port Arthur, Texas as well as the Yamaha Music Showcase in Houston, Texas.
Port Arthur, the heart of Texas Cajun country, is an ethnically and culturally diverse city that can lay claim to several strong musical traditions, including equal parts Cajun, zydeco, traditional country, southern rock, soul, gospel and bluegrass. Native son Frith mixes these influences in a folk-rock mold and produces a distinct Americana sound that adds a vibrant new element to what is currently called "Texas Music." Robert has been compared by radio personalities and club owners alike to national acts such as the Dave Matthews Band, Train, and Blues Traveler. The diversity of his original music has earned him airplay on radio stations with four different formats- Pop, Rock, Classic Rock and Country.
Perhaps MyTexasMusic sums up Robert best when it says, "Frith ranks with the likes of Dana Cooper as one of the best song deliverers in the business." He's a throw back to the good old days when the music was real and so were the people who made it! |
GBCA TERVIS TUMBLERS ARE STILL AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE! BUY YOURS AT THE BBVA COMPASS PERFORMANCE CUP REGATTA
by Kevin Box
The ubiquitous 16oz red Solo cup has become the mascot of the GBCA after-party. So much so, that I've often thought a cold beverage-laden red cup, glistening with condensation against a Galveston Bay sunset would make an appropriate club burgee, if we didn't already have one. Though the sweaty red cup will always be with us, there is now an alternative thanks to the work of Board member Beverly Caldwell. Custom insulated Tervis Tumblers complete with a sewn GBCA burgee inside will be available for purchase during the BBVA Compass Regatta October 17th and 18th.
