From the Commodore
by Duane Bez
It looks like we're starting off great for 2008. It's hard to believe the Commodore's Ball was almost 5 months ago. I hope everyone had a good time.
We already have the Icicle Series and Frostbite Regatta behind us. It was pretty nice weather for the dead of winter for the Icicle Series. That fog that built up, then swept out in Race 1 was pretty cool. And it seems we always lose one of those races to light air, but I'm pretty sure everyone had a great time anyway. Even though we knew we were going to finish some 15 minutes past the cutoff, Be Easy had David Popkin on Orion on her hip and we just weren't done racing until we crossed the finish line. It just reminds me why I don't live in Detroit. It is fun to see the increased interest in short-handed sailing.
Thanks again to Fleet Captain Kevin Box and the race committee for the Frostbite Regatta. And thanks to the racers for their patience on that fluky first day. I think you got your money's worth with three races on Sunday. We had a question about the recorded finish times of a few boats in one for the races, but thanks to John Lacy taking "billions and billions" of pictures and some detective work by Kevin we got to the bottom of that. The race committee had it right all along.
Coming up on May 24, a week before the Rum Races start, we're planning something a little different. We'll be presenting a basic sailboat racing class. We're hoping to encourage and educate people who have a boat, but who haven't raced, because they just didn't know where to start. Talk this up among your dock mates down at the marina. If we don't have anything posted on the website by the time this is published it will be up soon.
Further out on the horizon is the Regatta de Amigos we run with Lakewood Yacht Club, for you off-shore animals. And don't forget GBCA Texas Race Week, moved back to July 25-27, by popular demand.
With that move of Texas Race Week from May to July, we may be losing major sponsorship from the Galveston Chamber of Commerce. Seems they liked us bumping up business a bit in the off season but they have plenty going on in the summer. If anyone has a suggestion for a major sponsor for this event, please contact your favorite board member so we can continue to bring you a high quality event.
And finally, let's remember that what we're doing out there on the water with all this racing is playing a game - with some big, expensive toys. If we're not out there to have fun, then we're going about it the wrong way. That being said, we have a lot of responsibility when we take people into a potentially hostile environment. Be sure to get out there and be competitive, but play fair and take care of each other out there. In other words, let's go have some SERIOUS FUN! |

"GETTING STARTED IN RACING" SEMINAR IS MAY 24 AND RUM RACES START AN HOUR EARLIER
GBCA is excited to announce the "Getting Started in Racing Seminar". If you have ever considered racing your boat, this event is for you. On May 24, 9 am there will be a chalk talk on the basic rules, strategy and tactics of sailboat racing given by experienced race officers and local sailing legends. In the afternoon, we'll take your boat out for some practice races, along with a mentor on board to help guide the way. The registration is a very modest $10. Registration is at http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubs/gbca.html
Speaking of Regatta Networks, GBCA has been using the site extensively this spring to manage the notice of race and race registration. So far feedback from both skippers and race event coordinators has been positive. Once you login and enter your boat information your profile will remain saved. From then on, registration and easy payment is just a few clicks away.
Saturday, May 31st marks the beginning of our very popular "Rum Races". For 2008 all of the start times, which are based on PHRF rating and GPS time, have been moved back an hour to allow racers more daylight.
Finally, the 'Regata de Amigos' Veracruz race begins June 6th at the Flagship pier. The safety seminar for participants is May 10th 9 a.m. at Lakewood Yacht Club. The Emporio Hotel is closed for remodeling, so this year's Race Committee headquarters will be in the Fiesta Inn, just around the corner. The Awards Banquet will be across the street at the Navy Officer's Club.

VERACRUZ ANTICIPATION
by Kevin Box
This is the year we run the bi-annual race from Galveston to Veracruz. This historic race was first run in 1968 and we are hoping for a record turnout on this 40th anniversary.
The race will start this year on Friday, June 6, with all the functions in Veracruz on the 12th, 13th and the awards banquet on the 14th. Even if you do not race it is worth coming down to participate.
You can find more details on the website: www.veracruzregatta.com
We hope to see you there!

SUMMER IS UPON US AND GBCA IS RACE READY
by Chris Kelley
Summer brings the return of the heat and humidity we're so accustomed to. Fortunately it also marks the return of GBCA's popular rum races. Race #1 will take place the evening of May 31st. The navigation for the approximately 13 nautical mile triangular course is very simple, with fixed rounding marks and the start/finish between Clear Creek markers one and two. This is pursuit style race, with slower boats starting first. Participants have the option of racing spinnaker, nonspinnaker or in the shorthanded class. Of course, there is an awards party at the GBCA clubhouse at Watergate Marina once the toys are put up for the evening. The NOR is posted on the homepage of www.gbca.org or if you have questions call the GBCA phone at 713-820-7245.
Also starting on June 6th is the Veracruz regatta we do in partnership with Lakewood Yacht Club. Once again all the racers will have onboard GPS transponders. Throughout the first and second week of June, you can check the progress of your favorite boats as they make their way south over the 630 nautical mile course. All you need to do is add www.iboattrack.com to you web browser. The transponder and mapping technology has improved from the last Veracruz race, two years ago. The tracking now updates hourly with available surface wind and sea temperature data overlays. In addition, time lapse animation really gives an idea of how the race is progressing. It's almost as good as being there, well almost.
In July GBCA has a sailboat racing event happening every weekend! Rum races will take place the first three Saturday evenings. The last weekend of the month, July 24 thru 26, will be Texas Race Week at Galveston. Texas Race Week features day races out of the jetties with the possibility of some courses going to the Flagship hotel and back. Over the years, Luc and his staff over at the Galveston Yacht Basin have gone out of their way to make this a great event. It's the area's premier summer offshore racing event.
Speaking of Galveston Yacht Basin, GBCA's first ever "Conundrum" race took place the evening of April 18th. By all measures, the event was a huge success. The wind, weather, moon and tides were nearly perfect for the shorthanded crews. Of the 15 boats that participated in the overnight event, 3 teams we're father and son. One of the father son teams, Team Bad Moon traveled their J24 all the way from Dallas to participate in this inaugural event. The only married couple was Beverly and Walter Caldwell, who placed a very respectable third in non-spin in their new boat. We're pleased to report that marriage counseling was not be required after the race.
After the success of the "Conundrum" it was evident the GBCA race committee had cashed out all their good weather karma for the GBCA Spring Regatta held April 26 and 27th. The fleet was at the mercy of a giant weather vortex, as the winds varied from 31 knots to zero in every direction and in very short order. Such winds made setting up a race course an exercise in futility. As the hours wore on, it appeared that the same low level clouds would move south, then north, and back again. Stuck in a weather stalemate, even the pelicans looked confused as they flew through a variety of wind speed and directions in a span of a few hundred yards. On Sunday the race committee opted to start racing an hour earlier to make up for Saturday. Just as the last boats finished, ominous clouds appeared from the southwest and the distant lightning and thunder signaled an end to the racing for the weekend. At the post race awards, many of the long time Galveston Bay racers remarked that it was some of the strangest weather they have ever seen.
Finally, GBCA members are looking forward to participating in Houston Yacht Club's Leukemia Cup on June 21 and 22, and the happy hour kickoff party June 12 at The Drake near downtown Houston. This is a great cause to support, even if you don't sail. We'll see you there!

J. HOWARD WILLIAMS' NEWEST BOOK, BLUE LADY, NOW AVAILABLE
BLUE LADY is a novel about events that could have occurred on any one of the thousand or more sailboats that have raced from Galveston to Veracruz. The author, J. Howard Williams, has successfully raced boats in this competition in years past. The joys and frustrations experienced by anyone fortunate enough to sail this race are a part of this gripping tale. The race to Veracruz was first sailed in 1968, and has gotten bigger and better with each addition sailed biennially. 2008 will see another effort. All of the characters and events described in BLUE LADY are fictitious. The boat and the race, however, do exist and are real. Get your copy of BLUE LADY from the publisher, Publish America, today! |
