From the Commodore
by Mary Miller
Greetings fellow sailors - as I write this the fall sailing season is in full swing. This weekend is the GBCA J24 circuit stop, it's going to be beautiful weather with a little more wind than last weekend. If you are not racing, load up the cooler and come out and cheer on the local teams - Mutinous Dogs, Tropical Aggression, Silver Bullet, Trick Bag, On the Edge and Moco Loco will be representing the Galveston Bay contingent, as well the infamous "Texas 4" (Lucy Wozniak, Jody Henry, Emma Browning and myself). We have resurrected our J24 Women's Nationals team to mix it up on Siren! The "In the Water Boat Show" is also this weekend at Watergate Yachting Center - even if you are not in the market for a boat there are plenty of cool things to check out.
In case you did not catch this on the GBCA discussion page, you will notice an increase in dues when you get your renewal notice in the mail. Senior dues are now $130 and the crew dues are $35. It's a fact of life that dues had to be increased to cover our operating expenses - I'm sure that all will agree that the new digs are much nicer.
I look forward to seeing everyone out for the Compass Bank Regatta on October 13 and 14, where we will also host the J80 Circuit Stop. Please sign up early! Harvest Mooner's - if you are looking for additional crew or crew looking for a boat - please post your needs on our crew list.
Your sailing quote for the day:
That's what a ship is, you know. It's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs but what a ship is... what the "Black Pearl" really is... is freedom. - Captain Jack Sparrow
Or, because it is Friday:
Jack Sparrow: Why is the rum gone? Elizabeth: Because it is a *vile* drink that turns even the most respectable men into complete scoundrels! Jack Sparrow: But why is the rum gone?
The first movie was still the best!
Smooth Sailing - your Commodore. |

COMPASS BANK PERFORMANCE CUP REGATTA IS OCTOBER 12 - 14, 2007
By Jody Henry
On the weekend of Friday, October 12th, 2007 GBCA will hold the 24th Annual Compass Bank Performance Cup Regatta on Galveston Bay. This is the biggest race of the fall racing season for GBCA. The overall winners in the One-Design, PHRF Spinnaker and PHRF Non-Spinnaker fleets will see their names join those of past winners on the crystal Compass Bank Trophy displayed at the Compass Bank Wealth Management Group headquarters in River Oaks, located at 2001 Kirby Drive in Houston.
As always, a full complement of shore side events will await racing crews. Friday starts out with a Happy Hour at the popular channel side bar, Outrigger's. Join us at 5:00 p.m. for appetizers, drink specials from Mount Gay Rum and free beer! The skipper's meeting will follow at 7:00 p.m. on the first floor deck of Outrigger's. Skipper or not, please come out after work and join us for a Mount Gay Rum drink.
After racing on Saturday, dinner, drinks and entertainment will be provided on the grassy point across from T Dock in the Seabrook Shipyard. If you're not sure where T dock is, simply drive to 3 Amigo's and at the last 90 degree turn, the event will be on your right. We'll have food catered by Classic Cafe, beer and more Mount Gay Rum. Music will be provided. Please plan on attending the festivities on Saturday night. Everything is included with your registration fee!
Speaking of registering, please go to www.gbca.org and sign up for the Compass Bank Regatta! The NOR is posted.
Sunday, the awards presentation will be at GBCA's office in Watergate Yachting Center. The crystal Compass Bank trophy will be presented to the overall winner of the Compass Bank Performance Cup Regatta.
There will be women's and men's T-shirts available this year. If you'd like to pre-order to guarantee the correct size, please email me your name and sizes. The shirts are 100% polyester. The men will have polo shirts and the women will have v-neck t-shirts sized for women. They are on sale for $25.
All of this would not be possible without the support of our GREAT sponsors! A special thank you to COMPASS BANK, HAYES RIGGING, UK HALSEY, MOUNT GAY RUM and C&C SAILMAKERS! Please make sure you call on our sponsors and when you do, mention you heard abut them from GBCA!
This year marks the first year that the Compass Bank Performance Cup Regatta will be the final event in the J80 Southern Circuit. This circuit regatta attracts J80 sailors from Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Colorado, and Texas. If you are an out of town J80 and need information on launching and storing your boat, please contact Walter Caldwell. We look forward to having you race with us and we'll see you on October 12th!

2007 GBCA Woman's Regatta Provides Challenges and Victory for Vicki Rhyne on s/v J109 "Mojo "
by Chris Kelley
The 2007 Galveston Bay Cruising Association (GBCA) Woman's Regatta on September was an exciting one. This unique GBCA race states that a woman should be on the helm at all times while racing. 11 boats competed this year, ranging in size from J22's to a pair of J109's. If you missed the event this year, you missed a treasure of goodies! The ladies of GBCA we really pampered in this regatta, with the C&C Sailmaker skippers packets filled with hand, foot and lip balm products from Arbonne, citrus pealers and pearing knifes from Pampered Chef, and 10% discount certificates at La DE DA Fine Lingerie!
Out on the water, the first race started in light air, with a series of embedded cumulus clouds maturing to the northeast and providing a challenge to tacticians and the race committee throughout the day. This system dissipated and moved north, only later to partially reform over La Porte, and provided to be a big influence on both direction and wind speed. The few boats that went left toward the weather on the first weather leg were rewarded with significant gains. Halfway thru race one, the wind jumped to from 7 knots to approximately 15 knots, forcing a headsail change on several boats. The bigger and heaver J109 boats took advantage of the increased velocity and accompanying wind shift, to stretch their legs and place 1st and 2nd in the first race.
For the 2nd race ,the winds continued and the Galveston Bay chop built, again favoring the bigger J109's. The J22's who came out to practice for the Woman's Rolex Keelboat Championship, got a good opportunity to see what November's Mojo sailed by Vicky Rhyne
conditions might have in store!
The 3rd race proved the most exciting of all, with a crowded starting line near the committee boat. "Mojo" was forced over early and had to turn back to restart. The wind began to taper for most competitors halfway thru the second weather leg. "Mojo"was quietly on a roll and made up the lost ground very quickly, going from dead last in the fleet to engage the lead J109 "Sea Trial" helmed by last years winner, Jody Henry. The result was essentially a J109 match race on the last downwind leg. Such close competition proved to be spectacular finish, with "Mojo" a boat length ahead! The feud was settled between the J109's who placed 6th and 8th in race 3, but the rest of the fleet was still in hot pursuit for 1st place in the last race. When the dust settled, Andrea Pola who traveled from Cape Cod to race with her friends, showed her winning form on J80 "Kicks" and won the final race. In the end, it was was the third and final race of the day that proved to be the closest of the three races run in the regatta.
Along with the overall, other fleets scored that we're scored we're the J22's and J80's.
In the J80's Andrea Pola, with such a strong 3rd race finish, managed to fend off long time rival and good friend Beverly Caldwell on "Cluster" and win the J80 class . In the J22 class, Janet Ruder finished last not just among the J22's but among the entire fleet for the first race. Digging out of a deep hole, Janet and crew turned things around and made the biggest comeback of the day. Janet took bullets in the J22 class for both the second and third race and secured an overall first place in the J22 fleet.
In the end, it was Vicky Rhyne who won the perpetual trophy followed by defending champions, Andrea Pola and Jody Henry.

GALVESTON BAY OBSTRUCTION UPDATE By Chris Kelley
I contacted Bob Stokes at GBF for more information and here's the e-mail he sent back:
"We (Galveston Bay Foundation) are still very interested in the issue of marine debris removal. In fact, we have a CIAP application pending for $500,000 as we speak to do more debris removal. We should know if we receive the money in the next month or two. If we do receive it, we'll get the money sometime in early 2008 and be ready to move forward. Apart from any funding issues, we have also begun discussions with the GLO on how to get them more active in removing some of these items. There is a small group of boaters I've met with one or twice before and I'd like to get them together with your group and get us all together and put a plan together to move forward. Would you be interested in moving forward with something like that?"
I plan on following up with Bob on October 11 to address the issues specific to sailboaters on Galveston Bay.
I would also like to verify that the obstructions we've documented still present a hazard. The next strong cold front, we need to go on a boat ride. If you are interested in helping with this project, please contact ckelley@cobfen.com
