LOST A CLIENT: YEA! | |
Recently I received an email from one of my clients. She informed me that her company was no longer going to need my ongoing consulting help. To give you a little background, this owner first attended our Destination BootCamp in 2004, then re-attended in 2006. She allowed me to share what she wrote to me: "My biggest goal was to reach 1 million in sales, remodel on our ten year anniversary, and change our restaurant's image. I am happy to report with everything I learned from you, I accomplished all three of my goals. Now, my husband and I are getting ready to sell our restaurant to a group of private investors. Thanks, Jon!" (Owner's name deleted to protect her privacy) Just so all of you understand: this email is the ultimate compliment to me! When I help you reach your goals, then I know I've successfully done my job. Which leads me to my next point: What goals do you have that you aren't reaching? If you aren't reaching them on your own, maybe it's time to get a little help, like this owner did. |

Enter Our Monthly Trivia Contest! |
Last month's winner, Sarah Aste from Denville, NJ knew that Longmont, Colorado is the birthplace of modern American retailing. Here's why: Longmont was the first place that James Cash (JC) Penney opened his first store in 1898. His first store was a meat market. But his first venture failed, so he went to work for Thomas Callahan, who owned one of the largest chains of retail stores at the time. The chain was called the Golden Rule stores, and they were based in Longmont. Then, Penney became Callahan's minority partner, and he was sent to Wyoming to run a Golden Rule store. When Callahan was ready to sell, JC was his choice. By 1913, Penney had acquired all 32 Golden Rule stores, and immediately changed their name to the JC Penney Company. Essentially, without the Golden Rule chain, built by Callahan, JC Penney would not have been able to reach the size and scope he did in such a short time. In fact, it might not have happened at all, except for Penney being the logical successor to Callahan. Then, as JC Penney's chain grew, he continued to incorporate the philosophies he learned from Callahan's chain into his management of his people. Years later, one of Penney's employees was Sam Walton, who eventually grew the Wal-Mart chain. Walton later said that his management philosophy was adopted from Penney. Trace it back and the path is clear: Longmont's Golden Rule chain is where it all began. This month's trivia question is easier: On July 21, 1873 what first happened in Adair, Iowa? Give us the answer to this and we'll send you a limited edition, hamster-escaping-the-wheel t-shirt, not available to the general public. |
