Hello and thank you for receiving our email updates.
Last week we hoste
d our 8th Annual Tucson Tri Camp and had a great time with a fantastic group of campers from throughout N. America. Athletes traveled to the sunny southwest to enjoy 4 - 7 days of training and fun from as far as New York, Pennsylvania and parts of Canada. We had fantastic weather with temperatures mostly in the 70's and sunny days. We'll be opening early bird registration soon for the 2010 camp at www.coachtroy.com, so stay tuned. Today (Sunday) I ran in my first race of the year, the Oro Valley Distance Classic 1/2 Marathon (http://www.arizonadistanceclassic.com/index.shtml). This is a very nice race (although quite challenging with some long steady climbs) that attracts about 1000 runners from around the area. They also have a 5K and a 400 Meter kids fun run, which my 5 year old (Hope) did with her mom. She was very excited about receiving her finishers medal.
My race went pretty well too as I finished in just under 1:20 at around a 6:04/mile pace. It feels good to race again and to enjoy the great atmosphere and excitement of participation. We'll probably schedule our Tucson Camp in 2010 to coincide with this half marathon... stay tuned.
As I ran today, and suffered tremendously in the last couple of miles (hey, that's what racing all about-- pushing it in the 'red zone'), I was reminded of the importance of 'waking your race legs' with some early season competitions. If you're planning to have a big season, make sure you get the kinks out in a few 'C-priority' events before jumping into your most important races. That might mean doing some road races, bike time trials or sprint distance tri's as training days during your build up for your peak event(s). Racing yourself into form is an effective strategy for all serious endurance athletes.
