Without an established 'foundation' of aerobic training, most athletes can never realize their true potential over the long term. Steady state aerobic training offers many benefits including building mitochondria, improving capillary density and improving fatty acid utilization.
For many athletes, the season is now over and their focus should shift away from hard interval work back to the fundamentals of 'laying down base' after a short period of rest and recovery. This is where the Spinervals Aero Base Builders come into play as part of a smart training program.
Aero Base Builders, which are based on the concept of 'aerobic intervals' are workouts designed specifically to focus on pedaling skill development and aerobic foundation building. Ranging from 1 hour to 2 hours, these workouts in the Spinervals series (5 of them) should be performed in almost any order from 2-5 days a week, depending on the athlete's focus and experience, for most of the 'base building' cycle of one's annual periodized training schedule.
