Tucson Training Camp - Days One through Five
2007 Tucson Camp group pic
Hot, sunny and cycling friendly!!! Tucson deserves its reputation as a great place to train for cyclists and multisport athletes alike because of the weather, the terrain and the tolerance for cyclists on the roads. While nothing is perfect, Tucson AZ is almost the perfect place for fitness oriented people and endurance athletes to call home. The town is simply filled with people out cycling, running, hiking and enjoying the great outdoors of the southwest.

Days one through five of our seven day, 5th annual spring training camp have gone spectacularly well in terms of weather, training and camper dynamics. Each day has given us temperatures in the mid 80's and clear sunny skies for unbelievable views of the surrounding mountain ranges. And the participants in this years camp, as in all others, are fantastic and friendly people eager to get stronger, learn and make new and long lasting friendships.

The ratio of male to female campers this year is 50/50, bucking the trend of 70% male and 30% female. And the range of ability levels goes from first year newbies to multi-time Ironman finishers making for a great mix of experience, enhancing the learning process for everyone.

During the camp thus far, we've done a 70 mile ride, a 1.5 hour climb up Mt. Lemmon, and a 2.5 hour ride over Gates Pass and the Saguaro National Forest...all under a crystal blue sky. Mix in a few runs of 30 to 60 minutes and several swims and you have a full schedule of steady, fitness building training! We're also doing V02max testing each day and one morning we had a Strendurance workout before heading out on a bike ride.

Each year I look so much forward to the Tucson Camp because of the weather and the mountains but mostly, I look forward to forging lasting relationships with many of the campers who attend my camps. It's great to get to spend quality time with dedicated athletes focused on improving, yet still balanced enough to realize that there's more to life than training and racing.

As for my personal training clients at home right now... wish you were here! I realize that I'm not as accessible during camps and appreciate your patience.  I'll be back at the office and addressing your training needs on Monday when I return home.
