March 2011

NHA has hit the ground running in 2011 and this issue of NHA News is jam packed with exciting updates and information. Of special note, we are very pleased to let you know of some recent improvements to both our website and online registration system. We're confident these changes will enhance your online experience with us.

If you haven't visited http://www.nhanow.com/home.aspx recently, we invite you to do so. Right away you will notice a cleaner look and easier navigation. Plus, the new website is filled with valuable information for both you and your students.

We've also streamlined the online registration system for your students, making it easier than ever to create an account, schedule certification exams and purchase study materials. If you haven't switched over to online registration, please contact client account manager to learn more about this simple process.

Finally, we want to quickly remind you to work with your client account manager on coordinating exam dates as early as you can. This allows us to provide you with accurate rosters and get exam materials to you in plenty of time for your students.

From the executive director:

Welcome once again to NHA News. As we move further into 2011, I wanted to take the opportunity to update you on several NHA fronts.

First, the NHA Certification Board welcomes Joseph McCormick to the Certification Board. Joe is the new public member representative on the Board, responsible for representing the concerns of the public as relating to our certification program policies.

The Board has been very busy evaluating all of our certification programs.  Most recently members have completed work on NHA Mission Statements and a Code of Ethics. As professionals, we understand the mission of an organization or program should reflect its purpose, or reason for being. With that as a backdrop, the Board recently reviewed the mission statements of three programs - the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS), the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), and the Certified Phlebotomy Technician ( CPT) - to ensure they still accurately reflect the purpose, business and values of the programs. Following that review, the mission statements below were ratified in November:

Billing and Coding Specialists

To promote a high standard of practice, and to recognize billing coding specialists who are proficient in the knowledge and skills needed to convert a medical procedure, diagnosis, or symptom into specific codes to submit a claim for reimbursement.

Certified Clinical Medical Assistants

To promote a high standard of practice and to recognize clinical medical assistants who are proficient in the knowledge and skills needed to assist doctors and nurses to safely and accurately perform a  variety of clinical and laboratory procedures as directed.

Phlebotomy Technicians

To promote a high standard of practice and to recognize phlebotomy technicians who are proficient in the knowledge and skills needed to safely and effectively collect, prepare and transport specimens as directed by supervisory personnel.

The Board also reviewed and ratified a Code of Ethics for professionals in the allied health practices. The Code is posted on the NHA website

http://nhanow.com/about-nha/code-of-ethics.aspx and included in all candidate handbooks. It serves as our guide to everyday professional conduct and calls for each of us to:

  • Use my best efforts for the betterment of society, the profession, and the members of the profession;
  • Uphold the standards of professionalism and be honest in all professional interactions;
  • Continue to learn, apply, and advance scientific and practical knowledge and skills, stay up to date on the latest research and its practical application;
  • Participate in activities contributing to the improvement of personal health, our society, and the betterment of the allied health industry;
  • Continuously act in the best interests of the general public;
  • Protect and respect the dignity and privacy of all patients.

Updated Candidate Handbooks. The candidate handbooks for the Clinical Medical Assistant, Phlebotomist and Billing & Coding Specialist have all been recently updated. The candidate handbook, which acts as the guide for anyone considering NHA certification, outlines all the certification program policies and provides an outline of what is covered on the exam (the exam blueprint or content outline). It also addresses how scores are reported, recertification requirements and procedures for special requests. Handbooks can be downloaded at no charge from the NHA website. Please review these revised handbooks and encourage those interested in sitting for a certification exam to become familiar with program policies.

Updated Job Task Analysis for Administrative Medical Assistant. The Certification Board has approved the Job Task Analysis Report conducted last year for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant.   Subject matter experts are currently working on exam revisions based on the new exam outline and we will soon communicate more about those revisions. To see the Administrative Medical Assistant new exam blueprint, click here.

Pharmacy Technician Exam Updates.  The Governing Board for the pharmacy technician certification program met late last year and approved the new exam blueprint and the report of the Exam Committee based on a 2010 updated job task analysis. Subject matter experts have been reviewing exam items and writing new ones to address new subject areas in the blueprint. A copy of the new exam blueprint is available here. Items are being pretested to address the new exam content areas. The new exam is expected to be implemented in late summer. Additionally, the ExCPT Certification Governing Committee welcomed three appointees, Traci Tonhofer, Bobbi Steelman and Cindy Switzer, to new terms. A complete list of the Governing Committee members is available at http://nhanow.com/about-nha/nha-board-of-directors.aspx.

NCCA Accreditation

I'm pleased to share that the NHA Certified Billing & Coding Specialist and Certified Clinical Medical Assistant exams have been granted accreditation by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). These exams are in addition to NHA's previously NCCA-accredited exams, Certified Phlebotomy Technician and Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT). There is more detail on the accreditation in this issue of NHA News.

As we progress through the year, NHA will continue to seek accreditation for additional certification programs and work to enhance these programs for candidates. We welcome your feedback as we continue to improve and wish you continued success throughout 2011.

Rebecca M. Rabbitt, Pharm.D.

Executive Director, Allied Health Certification Programs

NCCA Accreditation
NCCA

The NHA's Certified Billing & Coding Specialist and Certified Clinical Medical Assistant exams have been granted accreditation by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), bringing our total of accredited exams to four. Our previously NCCA-accredited exams are Certified Phlebotomy Technician and Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT).

NCCA, the accrediting arm of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE), grants accreditation to a select group of organizations that demonstrates compliance with the NCCA Standards for the Accreditation of Certification Programs. The accreditation process includes a comprehensive and independent expert analysis of the certification program, benchmarking it against the highest industry standards.

"While NHA has always adhered to quality standards in certification, accreditation by NCCA serves as an indicator to the public and other stakeholders that our exams meet the highest industry standards for certification exams," said Rebecca M. Rabbitt, Pharm.D., executive director of Allied Health Certification Programs at NHA.

Dan Schoepf, president of NHA, said, "We are pleased with this recent decision. The NHA Certified Billing & Coding Specialist and Certified Clinical Medical Assistant exams are valuable alternatives for those needing a national certification to advance their allied health career."

NHA certification demonstrates an individual's commitment to a chosen allied health profession and the safety of patients. NHA healthcare certification and continuing education programs have helped nearly 200,000 professionals gain a higher pay scale, better job opportunities, more career advancement options and job security.

Aggregate reports available

As a reminder, the NHA Certification Board, which governs policy for all NHA certification exams, approved a policy in August, 2010 that changed the process for handling confidential student exam data. The new policy states that confidential information cannot be disclosed without the candidate's permission, and that score results must be sent directly to the candidate. Based on this new policy, NHA will not release confidential information, including test scores and pass/fail results, directly to schools without the student's permission. Schools will receive an aggregate pass rate for their candidates compared to national and state pass rates.

During the candidate attestation step in the online registration process, candidates may opt-in to release confidential data to the school. Individual candidate pass/fail results will only be reported to schools for those candidates who specifically opt-in.

Exam scores will be sent to the candidate's home address, accompanied by a letter with the candidate's overall grade and indicating pass/fail. If a candidate passed, he/she also will receive a wallet-sized certification ID card and certificate with the NHA seal. Certificates will no longer be sent to the school for distribution to the candidates. If a candidate has not received a passing score, the letter will include info regarding retaking the exam.

Individual certificants can be verified on the NHA website or by visiting www.nhanow.com/verify. If you have any questions regarding the new reporting process please contact your client account manager.

Seeking volunteer subject-matter experts

Are you an expert in your field looking for an opportunity to 'give back' to your profession? NHA is looking for individuals interested in serving a one-year appointment on the NHA Subject-Matter Expert Committee. If you are interested, please send a letter stating your interest, your area of expertise, and a copy of your CV or resume to Joy Herman at Joy.Herman@examfx.com for consideration. Current opportunities:

· Item writer.You must commit to write 15 items each year you serve on an assigned topic from the exam outline. These would be written on your own time, or written as part of an Item-Writing Workshop that you attend. Deadlines would be established between you and the test developer. All item writers are provided guidance in appropriate item writing techniques.

· Examination committee. You must commit to participate in conference calls using an Internet-based technology, along with a separate phone line to review items or examinations in a group of several subject-matter experts. While every attempt will be made to select agreeable times, calls will be scheduled when a majority can meet. We will use Doodle to ask for your availability. Conference calls can run three to four hours, or up to an entire day.

NHA will allow you to serve in more than one capacity if your expertise is in more than one area. We will use separate panels of experts for any work on educational/preparatory products versus certification programs. If you choose to move from education/preparatory products to certification, or vice versa, we ask you to wait a period of two years. You can continue to serve in other areas during that time such as serving on an exam committee or an ad hoc committee.
