1. Pray for the Prime Minister and his Cabinet.  It seems apparent that in the coming days there will be a re-arrangement of Cabinet Ministers.  People will be taking up new roles and trying to learn their portfolios as quickly as possible.

2. Pray for wisdom for the current government as it considers whether or not to prorogue the current session, losing all it's unfinished legislation and starting again this Fall with another Throne speech.
(This has major implications for legislation we have been following in prayer that has not yet been passed into law.)

To learn more about prorogation see the government website below.

3. Let's continue to join with millions of other Christians as we pray for the release of the remaining 21 South Korean hostages in Afghanistan. (See this week's editorial for other insights about how to pray.)

Weeks are starting to book up for the Fall season, so we would encourage you to start planning now for when your team could come and take their turn on the wall, praying onsite for Canada's government.  Give us a call to get all your questions answered and reserve your spot.

Thanks for standing with us in prayer.

Peta, Kirsten, and Rob

Greetings,

Our first "Prayer Missionaries" have arrived.  Kirsten Harty (centre) and Peta Ellis (left), pictured here with Rob Parker in our dining room, are the first of several who will be joining us at NHOP for terms of up to 12 months.  These resident intercessors will play a vital role in keeping the flames of prayer going at our centre.

Kirsten, arrived from Kelowna, B.C. where she served on the staff of the "War Room" for a number of years.  She has been volunteering at NHOP since the spring of this year.  Peta comes to us from Saskatoon, S.K. bringing years of intercessory ministry experience.

We hope to introduce a couple more of our "Prayer Missionaries" to you as they arrive in the next month.  They will be joined by interns who arrive in mid-September.

Editorial: Lessons learned while praying for the South Korean hostages
Korean hostages

Millions of concerned Christians have now been praying for 3 weeks for the South Korean hostages in Afghanistan.  Quite understandably, questions arise about why God has not delivered them from the hands of their Taliban kidnappers.  After all, not only has there been a global effort to mobilize sustained prayer, but these believers come from the most prayerful nation on earth.

Here's some insights that have come to me as I have been praying and also asking the Lord what He is up to with this crisis.  First of all our theology begins to show itself in a situation where the evil of men's hearts seems to prevent the deliverance of God.  How big a God do we have?  This manifests itself in our own lives when we seem to be dealing with unanswered prayer.  Where are the angels?  Haven't we prayed enough?  Did someone sin?  Do we lack faith?

I'm guessing that many intercessors have moved beyond these anxieties to a different kind of prayer.  There is a dawning realization that the challenge of nation-building, in a place where Islam has ruled for centuries, is not going to be an overnight fix.   Because of the hostage situation intercession has now begun to focus on the bigger challenge of transforming Afghanistan.  Prayers are going up for its leaders and for the many excellent organizations who have moved in to help this challenging land.  The Taliban itself has become a major target for the intercessory army around the globe.  How many prayers have been offered for a change in their own hearts and a will to turn away from hatred and violence?

A friend who has been ministering in South Korea in the last couple of weeks has been astounded at the measure of prayer he is witnessing.  He also noted that each of those hostages had written "good-bye" letters to their families as part of their preparation for this medical mission.   They had counted the cost.  Perhaps the Lord is using this crisis to show the Church worldwide that He is calling us to a new level as we engage with the stronghold of Islam and seek to reach the millions in those lands who have yet to hear about the saving grace of Jesus Christ our Lord.

By the time you read this newsletter there may have been a breakthrough for the remaining hostages.  We all keep praying for their deliverance, for their health, their mental, emotional and spiritual state, and their families back home.  The Lord is in control.  He is good and He is strong.  However, let's not forget to keep praying for the larger issues that have been raised by the sufferings of our South Korean brothers and sisters.  That's why they went to Afghanistan in the first place.
