  • Dear friend,

Every prayer team that arrives on divine assignment at the National House of Prayer seems to encounter some wonderful surprises. The Lord delights in building something special into their stay in Ottawa. This week's newsletter will give you a glimpse of what happened to a Kingston group that has been with us in the last few days.

Praying with the Speaker of the House
    Speaker of the House

A team from the emerging Kingston House of Prayer had the wonderful privilege of meeting with their M.P. this week. After attending Question Period they were escorted into the office of the Honourable Peter Milliken - the Speaker of the House.

They learned much about his key role in presiding over the House of Commons and about the many extra responsibilities and roles that he fulfills. For one thing, they became aware of his key role in fostering relationships and harmony by hosting weekly multi-partisan dinners in his own dining room in the Speaker's section of the House. These "meet, greet and eat" functions are designed to encourage friendships and better harmony amongst all members. A very worthwhile endeavour!

Roger Rutter, the team leader, asked for and was given permission to pray for the Speaker, and blessed him as his representative in Ottawa. The Kingston team assured him they would continue to pray for him, now with much better insight, and it was clear that all around had been profoundly touched by the encounter.

The Speaker of the House's Prayer
    Praying Hands

Did you know that every day that Parliament is sitting, that it opens with a prayer? We learned from the Speaker of the House that he reads a prayer in both official languages, which is then followed by a moment of silence, at the beginning of each day.

Upon asking if we could obtain a copy of that prayer, the Honourable Peter Milliken not only copied it for our use, but made it clear that it is a public document, which in fact he helped to frame. As the team for Kingston was in his office, he agreed to translate the prayer and read it to the team.

We thought many of our subscribers would want to know the words of the prayer and be able to pray it daily with sincerity and faith. We have printed it below for your use and encouragement.

What your M.P.'s pray every day...

    Almighty God:

We give thee thanks for the great blessings which have been bestowed on Canada and its citizens, including the gifts of freedom, opportunity and peace that we enjoy.

We pray for our Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth, and the Governor General.

Guide us in our deliberations as Members of Parliament, and strengthen us in our awareness of our duties and responsibilities as Members. Grant us wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to preserve the blessings of this country for the benefit of all and to make good laws and wise decisions. Amen

    1. Pray for Canada's farmers. Let's pray for the new minister of Agriculture - Chuck Strahl, as he seeks to find a long-term solution for subsidizing farmers as they compete in the global economy.

    2. Pray about the new "Accountability Legislation" which is the first act of the new government. It will be a great improvement if it can not only clean up corruption, but also encourage a spirit of true integrity.

    3. April 10th marked the the start of the Supreme Court's spring session as the new justice Marshall Rothstein was seated. Let's pray that the right cases will be brought before these judges and that the wisdom of God would be discerned and implemented in our nation.

    Pray for us ...

Our team is often on the road. Fran just got back from Halifax on Tuesday. Rob heads for the Eastern Arctic on Thursday, and Richard flies to Winnipeg next Wednesday. We would appreciate your prayers for safety and effectiveness wherever we minister.

    Representing you in Ottawa,

Rob, Fran, Richard and the team at NHOP
