Introducing: The Age of Autism on YouTube
The mercury/autism connection has stronger support than ever! In their book, The Age of Autism, Mercury, Medicine and a Man-made Epidemic, Dan Olmsted and Mark Blaxill trace the history of mercury poisoning from medicinal products and make a compelling case that ethyl-mercury was present at the beginning of the autism epidemic.
For those of you who haven't seen Dan and Mark present their power point, or would like to share it with others, we are now making video segments of their presentation available on YouTube. The links below will take you to various topics. Watch them all in order to get the full story.
Please share these with anyone who is willing to watch - your spouse, your family, your friends, your doctor or your legislators. Thimerosal is still being used worldwide in infant vaccines; we need your help to put a stop to it.
There are seven videos in the series. Below is a link to the first one. All others can be seen on the SafeMinds YouTube Channel.

British Medical Journal on Flu Vaccines
In May of 2010 the British Medical Journal (BMJ) news reported the suspension of flu vaccination in children 5 and younger due to a spike in reports of seizures associated with the vaccine.
In August of 2010 the same journal reported that "Australian health authorities failed to respond quickly and appropriately after a spike in febrile convulsions and other adverse events among children given seasonal influenza vaccination".
More recently, Peter J Collignon, Peter Doshi and Tom Jefferson weighed in on the issue in BMJ asking if we should really be surprised about adverse events following influenza immunization in the U.S. Although authorities promote influenza vaccines as being extremely safe, according to the authors, there is now abundant evidence that such optimism is misguided. They go on to state that "vaccine policies must ensure they are doing more good than harm" and that evidence suggests this is not the case with influenza.
In Australia in 2009, during winter when young children (0-4 years) were first hit with the new H1N1 strain, the admission rate for influenza was 57 per 100,000. In the US, CDC says that influenza results in hospitalization for approximately 20 per 100,000 children aged 2 to 5 years , but vaccine-induced febrile convulsions resulting in hospitalization in US young children, likely occurred at a rate of 114 per 100,000 children vaccinated . According to the FDA, a "serious adverse event" is defined as hospitalization that results from a vaccine adverse event. Thus vaccinating young children without risk factors likely caused more serious adverse events than disease from the new "pandemic" itself.

Take Action: NIEHS Strategic Plan
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is reviewing and updating their Strategic Plan. As part of the process, they will be reviewing their progress towards the goals outlined in the previous Strategic Plan, building on the previous Plan, filling the gaps, and expanding the new opportunities.
According to NIEHS, they will be planning the Institute's direction for the next 5 years (2012-2016). The process is expected to take approximately 15 months and has been designed to ensure maximum engagement of all staff and external stakeholder groups. The Strategic Plan will include new mission and vision statements along with strategic goals and strategies for implementation.NIEHS is actively soliciting input from stakeholders through April 30 and the Strategic Plan web page is now open. It is important that NIEHS hear from our community. Your input can provide critically needed direction for future autism-environmental research.
Please share your ideas here. To integrate all of the ideas, there will also be a two-day Stakeholder Community Workshop in late July 2011. Individuals from stakeholder communities will be asked to attend, participate and provide input. The draft Mission, Vision statements and Strategic Goals created during the workshop will be released in October 2011 with a communication and public comment period through November 2011. Final draft is targeted for April 2012 with final publication of the Strategic Plan is scheduled for June 2012.Be sure to make your thoughts known! |

Enroll now in IAN Project and make sure your voice is heard.
In the near future the Interactive Autism Network (IAN) will launch the first major survey to study wandering and elopement among individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). We all are aware of the tragic news stories where a child with autism has been able to escape the watchful eyes of their caretakers, often with tragic consequences. Yet little research has been conducted to understand the scope of this problem or what are the best methods for preventing wandering or elopement.
To understand elopement and wandering behavior in ASD, researchers need information both from families of individuals who do and do not wander and elope. In order to determine who is at risk, all families in the U.S. autism community are encouraged to participate in the survey, whether or not their loved one engages in these behaviors.
Survey participants must first be enrolled in the IAN Project (to register, visit: www.ianresearch.org), and be the parent or guardian of a child or dependent adult with ASD. Since the enrollment process can be time consuming for parents of a child with autism, we wanted to give families a heads up that this important survey will be available soon so they can register in advance
Since 2007, the IAN Project has connected thousands of individuals on the autism spectrum and their families with researchers nationwide to accelerate the pace of autism research through an innovative online initiative housed at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore. With more than 36,000 participants today, the IAN Project has largest pool of autism data in the world.

SafeMinds Book Review by Amy Gracia
Vaccine Epidemic: How Corporate Greed, Biased Science, and Coercive Government Threaten Our Human Rights, Our Health, and Our Children - Louise Kuo Habakus and Mary Holland, Editors
"To all who are asking the questions, and all who are demanding the answers." The editors' simple statement of intention is a most apt introduction for their eclectic and powerful collection of voices in Vaccine Epidemic. This compilation text succinctly reaches into the heart and soul of the vaccine discussion to fulfill that goal for those who spend their lives seeking answers. Editors Louise Kuo Habukus, M.A and Mary Holland, J.D. present all sides of the vaccine debate with thought-provoking ideas, plainly-defined data, and visuals which defy the simplistic justifications of the pro-vaccine crowd. The editors confront pro-vaccine's well-oiled, propagandized arguments and strip them down to reveal the stark truth about the dire consequences of vaccine injuries. Insightful articles expose how and why basic human rights are being denied, while a triumvirate of powerful government, science, and corporate forces reap the benefits. Organized into segments on vaccine choice, personal narratives, and debate topics, the book also calls for research and civil debate. Two appendices, which include supporting documents and tools to determine vaccination choice, are valuable references. Louise Kuo Habakus and Mary Holland are the co-founders and board members of the Center for Personal Rights, Inc., a non-profit foundation founded to "protect and advance personal rights, including the right to vaccination choice." Vaccine Epidemic poses the questions all parents must consider and provides answers from legal, ethical, and emotional perspectives. Additionally, Mary Holland is a research scholar at NYU School of Law.
