 SafeMinds Opposes H.J. Res. 9 by Rep. John Carter (R-TX) to use the Congressional Review Act to remove important new mercury pollution controls for cement plants
One of the first bills introduced in the new Congress would block new toxic emissions standards for cement plants - the third largest manmade source of mercury pollution in America. Mercury is a well known neurotoxin that is especially damaging to the developing fetus, infants and children because their organ systems, especially the brain, are still growing and maturing (1).
The new pollution standards would cut mercury pollution from cement plants by 92% and would also cut out 5,200 tons of other hazardous air pollutants, along with 5,900 tons of acid gases. In the process, they'd save up to 2,500 lives per year, and avoid tens of thousands of asthma attacks and other health problems. Click here to read full statement.

Vaccines and Autism - Time to Get to the Truth
This video has been some months in the making and its release today is highly appropriate given the new allegations regarding Dr. Andrew Wakefield, which we believe to be calculated primarily to attempt to end the debate over vaccines and autism, rather than having any merit. This past spring, Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius was interviewed by Reader's Digest. In her interview, she stated that people who question vaccine safety should not be given equal weight by the press, compared to public health officials. Since the vaccine/autism controversy is back in the news this week, we thought that it was important to help the press understand that they need to do their homework on this issue. The health of 4 million infants a year in the United States and millions more worldwide is riding on the ability of our press to finally delve into this issue and think critically about it. Vaccines are a multi-billion dollar industry internationally and for many pharmaceutical companies, it is the fastest -growing segment of their business. Even the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) make money from licensing of vaccines. There is also a swiftly revolving door between the CDC, the FDA and the vaccine manufacturers in terms of recruiting. For example, former CDC director, Julie Gerberding, is now the head of Merck's vaccine division. Truly unconflicted research in this area is rare and SafeMinds has information obtained through FOIA requests indicating that the CDC has massaged data to its own benefit in the past. Last week, an article in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), written by a freelance newspaper reporter, Brian Deer, created a media firestorm in the United States. UK Flu Vaccine with Thimerosal
Pandemrix, an influenza vaccine manufactured by Glaxo Smith Klein, is given to young children in the UK. It contains both thimerosal and squalene. Reports suggest a higher rate of adverse side effects from Pandemrix compared to flu vaccines without these ingredients. To read more, go here.
New York Cement Plant Study - Mercury in Local Population
A team of researchers from Harvard University have released a report showing that the residents living near the LaFarge cement plant in Ravenna, New York have elevated levels of blood mercury relative to the national average. Read article here.
 Independent Seafood Testing Shows Mercury in Some Fish Higher than FDA Standard
GotMercury recently tested samples of fish in stores and restaurants in California. Their results suggest that consumers may be at greater risk from mercury in seafood than previously thought. His team has published more than 600 scholarly articles and the most recent findings are being ignored by the World Health Organization (WHO).
