Message from the Executive Director
With exposure to environmental mercury from coal-burning power plants and medical mercury in the form of thimerosal in flu and other routinely recommended vaccines increasing, this year SafeMinds board decided to launch a new grass roots initiative to inform the public about the health risks associated with mercury exposure using social media outlets and advertising. Our efforts have been labeled anti-vaccine by some, yet this is no more an anti-vaccine issue than Ralph Nader's efforts to make cars safer were anti-automobile. Is it too much for the American public to demand that products administered to pregnant women, infants and children be free of a known neurotoxin like mercury? I think not.
My thanks to all for your support and steadfast efforts in this up-hill battle we face. I long for the day we reach our journey's end and unnecessary exposure to neurotoxicants is a thing of the past, but today is not that day. Our children and those not yet born are depending on us to continue to advocate for a safer future. And we at SafeMinds are dedicated to doing just that.

Lyn Redwood Featured on Fox News
SafeMinds' Executive Director, Lyn Redwood, RN, MSN, appeared on Fox and Friends with Alisyn Camerota to discuss our campaign to educate the public about mercury in flu vaccines. Lyn stressed the need to avoid mercury-containing vaccines, particularly for pregnant women, infants and children. SafeMinds would like to thank Fox for helping to spread this critical safety message. The typical viewership for this show is 1.2 million so we are happy to have reached such a large audience. SafeMinds is committed to ongoing work to remove mercury from all vaccines and to giving the public the information it needs to avoid mercury exposures.

If you have ever eagerly, or even desperately, picked up copies of books that promise "You Can ___________ in ___ Easy Steps," only to be extremely disappointed, rest assured, Dr. Mark Hyman's how to, The UltraMind Solution, actually delivers on its claim of being, "a new road map for treating disease." Hyman's pioneer program promises a unique blueprint to restore the mind and fix the "broken brain" by first healing the body. While at first glance the subject sounds cliché, there is nothing ordinary about Dr. Hyman's formula for wellness. His book examines a completely new model of thinking in medicine which discredits the old paradigm of treating symptoms with pharmacology. Dr. Hyman's radical theory discards the traditional idea of diseases and asks his readers to consider chronic conditions in a different light. He asserts that the medical community has been treating symptoms rather than curing the silent epidemic of neurological and psychiatric disorders that he calls the "broken brains" of Alzheimer's, autism, mood disorders, attention deficit disorder, Parkinson's, psychoses, and other neurodegenerative disorders. The FDA should ban mercury-containing fillings. Dental amalgam is the largest exposure to mercury in the general population and, as such, its removal from dental practice will have a large impact on the health of the public. Mercury is toxic in all forms, and its effects are evident even at low levels. Mercury has been linked to autism, Alzheimer's disease, Minimata Disease, acrodynia, kidney failure, peripheral neuropathy, loss of peripheral vision, and death. It has no place in modern medicine.
