Your Support was Huge! Thanks so much to everyone who supported the SafeMinds Mercury Free Kids Have Safe Minds online auction held July 20th - July 30th.
More than $12,000 was raised to support our purpose to restore health and protect future generations by
eradicating the devastation of autism and associated health disorders induced
by mercury and other man made toxicants.
This was a true community affair -- from our generous bidders, to the companies and individuals who donated items, to the other autism organizations like Autism Research Institute, National Autism Association and Extreme Sports Camp who helped spread the word. We are so grateful for your support!

Fourth National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals Levels of Lead Decline as Mercury Levels Continue to Rise
The Fourth National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals is the most comprehensive assessment to date of the
exposure of the U.S. population to chemicals in our environment.CDC has
measured 212 chemicals in people's blood or urine-75 of which have
never before been measured in the U.S. population. This report includes new information on mercury in blood and urine for the 2005-2006 period as well as the addition of four parabens and two phthalate metabolites. The report shows that levels of lead in the U.S population
continue to decline whereas mercury levels continue to rise.
The blood and urine samples were collected from
participants in CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which
is an ongoing survey that samples the U.S. population every two years. Each two
year sample consists of about 2,400 persons. The Fourth Report includes
findings from national samples for 1999-2000, 2001-2002, and 2003-2004. The data are analyzed separately by age, sex and
race/ethnicity groups. The Updated Tables, July 2010 provides additional data
from the 2005-2006 survey period for 51 of the chemicals
previously reported through 2004 in the Fourth Report and the new addition of
four parabens and two phthalate metabolites in 2005-2006.

US Senate Looks At Autism and the Environment The Senate Environment and Public Works
Children's Health Subcommittee held a hearing that looked at the role of the
environment in the cause of autism. SafeMinds acknowledges the hearings as a
critical first step in helping hundreds of thousands of children and families
affected by autism.

Click here to watch archived video. SafeMinds Executive Director Lyn Redwood made the following statement to the sub-committee: Honorable Chairman Klobuchar and Members of the Senate Health Committee, I am writing to you today to thank you and the Committee for your leadership in holding a Congressional Hearing on the State of Research on Potential Environmental Health Factors with Autism and Related Neurodevelopment Disorders. The CDC's recently released data of December 2009 estimated that the number of children diagnosed with autism is one in 110, equating to 1 in 70 boys born in 1998. With no indication the epidemic has subsided in any way, the United States, in 2010, is estimated to be coping with at least one percent of our children now affected with autism. Autism is growing at an exponential rate and cannot be explained by migration patterns or diagnostic substitution. It is a true epidemic and a nationwide health crisis. Parallels in New Delhi, India
An
Epidemic Induced By Added Doses Of Thimerosal-Preserved Vaccines
Provided by Paul King, Ph.D. of COMEDtold by Cherry Bethel
Misra, a New Delhi
nursery-school principal and reported by Paul G.
King, PhD
When reviewing
the "60" declarations filed in the CoMeD lawsuit, Dr. King was struck by a
declaration filed by FAX from a New
Delhi nursery school founder and its principal for 37
years.
Except for Dr. King's comments [in
bracketed graytext]
and footnotes, the story told in the text that follows this introduction is
a verbatim recounting of changes in the Indian vaccination program for Indian
children starting in 2000 in a manner that initially parallels the US program
starting in the late 1980s and then changes in a manner that accelerates the
harm to those children from 9 doses of Thimerosal-preserved vaccines.

A Veteran DAN Doctor's Thoughts on Reducing the
Risk of Autism During Pregnancy
When Dr. Cindy Schneider finished her medical residency in
1990, she planned a career in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN). After having
three children, two of whom are on the autism spectrum; Dr. Schneider's career
changed forever. Not long after her children were diagnosed with autism, Dr.
Schneider attended her first DAN! Think Tank. The year was 1996. "I missed attending the first Dan Think Tank by just one
year," Dr. Schneider laughed, realizing how long she has been researching
autism. She continued, "In those days, Dr. Rimland, the other scientists, and I
thought autism was an 'orphan disease', that is a disease that is incredibly
rare. When we witnessed the increase in prevalence rates, it was mind numbing."
Continue reading SafeMinds interview with Dr. Cindy Schneider which includes precautions Dr. Schneider feels that women should take
before, during and after pregnancy to optimize their child's neurological
development. |

Dan Olmsted and Mark Blaxill:
Our book "The Age of Autism: Mercury,
Medicine, and a Man-made Epidemic" goes on sale Sept. 14, and starting
today we're asking you to buy copies and urge friends and family to do the same.
Click HERE to order. We started on the journey to write this book
determined to seek the truth, and now we need you to help spread the word about
what we found. Early sales increase press runs, expand bookstore orders and
launch best sellers that command national attention. For the sake of our
children, our country and our future, attention MUST be paid.
Says Robert F. Kennedy Jr.:
"Olmsted and Blaxill's devastating account
shows how medical and manufacturing interests have mounted an assault on human
health for decades and covered their tracks along the way. The Age of Autism is
only the latest episode in centuries of crimes against nature but is in many
ways the most troubling. Autistic children are the canaries in the coal mine;
shame on all of us if we don't heed their distress call."

Please Support ARI's Efforts to Win a Grant to Assist Homeless Individuals on the Autism Spectrum This month the Autism Research Institute (ARI) entered the Pepsi Challenge competition to win a grant to fund the development of a model program to assist homeless individuals on the autism spectrum. The plan is to hire two people to consult with staff at shelters and missions in the downtown San Diego community. They will conduct outreach with information about adults on the autism spectrum and recommend various ways to assist them. In addition, we plan to establish a small office nearby so we can meet directly with those on the autism spectrum to provide them with information and support on accessing local resources.

Taking Umbrage with Dr. Nancy Snyderman
By Becky Estepp, SafeMinds Media and Government Affairs Manager for Age of Autism
I woke up last Wednesday feeling great. Months ago I had
purchased tickets for the Angels vs. Red Sox game for that afternoon. My
younger (neuro-typical) son and I were looking forward to a day filled
with blue skies, sunshine, stadium snacks and rooting for his favorite
team, the Red Sox. More importantly, my son and I would have one of
those rare days that did not revolve around autism.
Angel stadium is an hour-and-a-half drive from our house, so we'd
need to leave quite early to make the noon game. As I got ready to go, I
turned on the TV and caught the Today show for about five minutes. As
the television warmed up I could hear Dr. Nancy Snyderman talking about
the whooping cough (pertussis) epidemic. My first thought as I listened
to Dr. Snyderman was, "Why can't autism ever be declared an epidemic?"
While I am concerned that there are 1500 confirmed cases of whooping
cough in my state (CA) and seven deaths from this disease is tragic;
surely 1 in 100 children on the spectrum should justify the epidemic
moniker. But sadly, despite the unprecedented and overwhelming number of
children diagnosed with autism, it is still not recognized as an
epidemic.

Arizona scientists are studying the toxic effects of mine
tailings on those living close by.
The EPA's upcoming rule on mercury emissions may also help
significantly with global warming gases by having the greatest impact on the
oldest coal-fired power plants. Read the story here.
Thousands of underground coal fires are spewing an estimated
40 tons of mercury into the earth's atmosphere annually. Most burn uncontrolled for years. A 48 year-old fire in Centralia, PA sickened
so many residents that the federal government bought out homeowners. For more information, read here.
