New Report on Coal-Fired Power Plant Mercury Emissions

plantA newly published report by the Environmental Integrity Project, comparing company-reported data from 2007 to 2008, shows that mercury emissions at 27 of the 50 highest emitting plants in the United States increased in that time period.  Texas had five of the top 10 dirtiest plants.  The technology currently exists to reduce mercury emissions from coal-fired plants by up to 90% but poor enforcement of the Clean Air Act by the EPA allows these plants to continue polluting.  Coal-fired power plants account for more than 40% of the mercury emissions in the US.  In 2008, they released  44.7 tons of mercury into the environment.  For further information click here.  To view the full report, click here.

Great Salt Lake Contaminated with Mercury

salt lakeRecent reports indicate that Great Salt Lake is the most heavily mercury-polluted lake in the country.  Scientists have been investigating the reasons.  Click here to see a video news report.

Please note that there is one inaccuracy in this report.  There is no such thing as a non-toxic form of mercury.  While inorganic (airborne) mercury is assumed to be less toxic to humans and wildlife than organic (ethyl and methyl) mercury based on the current science, all forms of mercury are dangerous.

David Kirby's New Book, Animal Farm, is a Hit!

animal factory"A propulsive chronicle. Thanks to Kirby's extraordinary journalism, we have the most relatable, irrefutable, and unforgettable testimony yet to the hazards of industrial animal farming." BOOKLIST

"Kirby combines the narrative urgency of Sinclair's novel with the investigative reporting of Schlosser's book - Animal Factory is nonfiction, but reads like a thriller. There's no political pleading or ideological agitprop in this book; it's remarkably fair-minded, both sober and sobering... it has the potential to change the collective American mind about contemporary food issues."
