November 4th, 2008, will certainly go down in the
books as one of the most eagerly anticipated
dates in modern history. Record numbers of
American citizens turned out to vote in this
election - millions and millions of people
casting votes fueled by hope or by fear,
by personal beliefs, by a wish for change, and by a
sense of duty.
From the Presidential campaign to our
statewide ballot initiatives, this election hit
people on a more personal level than any in
recent times. Americans overwhelmingly voted
for change in our next President, and we all
are now focused on what will happen in the next
few years as we see what shape that may
take. Unfortunately, in our state of California
old ways of thinking won out, fueled by a very
well-run and well-funded campaign of lies. But it isn't
over yet : the
passage of Propostion 8 -
the anti-gay/lesbian marriage initiative - has
created a furor in the LGBT community and
others who support our right to marry that is
remarkable. News of protests and lawsuits has
been on every news channel in the country
over the past week, and I dont think an hour
has gone by since last Wednesday that I
havent gotten an email forward from
somebody with a petition or info mail about
Prop 8. It is like a giant fire was lit under the
collective butts of the LGBT community, and I,
for one, am proud to see the masses of people
getting involved and taking a stand for our
rights. Big change does not come easily, and it
is likely to be a hard struggle - but it will be
worth it in the end. Palm Springs Pride
Weekend over November 1st and 2nd brought
out a lot of people to enjoy the great weather,
fun events and a festive parade. For those
who attended our L Spot/Lucy and Gail events
on Friday and Saturday, I hope you had as
much fun as we did. Comics Jennie McNulty
and Karen Williams really rocked the house on
Friday night, and Deejay Zenway kept the
dance floor moving on Saturday. Thanks to all
of you who attended! For photos from the events, log
on to the L Spot
Home Page and click on the Photo Album. If you
have photos from the parade and festival, please
send
them along! The Holiday
Season hasn't gotten in to full swing yet, but there are
some good events coming up to keep you
occupied in the meantime - check out the details
below. Many of you
have asked if the L Spot will be doing a New Years
Eve event again this year. After much thought, due to
the struggling economy and the high cost of producing
a quality event, we won't be doing a New Years Party
this year. I hope
that you all find fun and festive things to do anyway!
Wishing you all a great month, and a very happy
and healthy Thanksgiving! Your friend and

L Spot's Monthly Womens Mixer
|
|
Will you be there? Our November Women's Mixer
is coming up on Wednesday the 19th, from 6-8pm at
Look Patio Restaurant and Bar in Palm Springs.
Look has just re-opened under new ownership - it is
as
charming and cool as ever, with some great new
touches! Come and socialize, meet some new people
and say hello to old friends, bring business cards or
flyers for the Biz Table if you want to network, and
enjoy spending time with a diverse and fun crowd of
women. The whole place is ours for the
mixer, so there will be room to sit and relax. Light
appetizers and happy hour drink prices are
provided. Their regular menu will be available as well,
so you
can check it out and stay for dinner if you
want! Cost is $10 at the door, with 70% going to
the FIND Food Bank, a non-profit local organization
that is committed to providing food to people in need.
Our November mixer at Dezart One Gallery was fun,
with lots of good conversation and great art to view.
Despite the fact that it was held on the night of the final
Presidential debate (oops!) which kept some people
home, we had a good crowd and raised $600 for
Theresa's Wish and the Making memories Breast
Cancer Foundation. Thank you to Kim and Marian of
Dezart for offering their space, to Texie for helping with
the bar, and to all who attended for making it a great
night!

The goal of the L Spot web site is to help bring
the
women's community together by providing a
place
where women can find information about
lesbian life here in the desert, and also to
provide a
venue where you can advertise your groups,
teams,
events, business - whatever you have going
on for
women in the area. Thanks to you all, it's
working!
Through our monthly newsletter, we can
spread the
word to more women about what we have to
offer.
Please take a minute to forward this to your
friends
that arent on our mailing list so they can get in
on
the action. And keep us posted with whats
going on!
By working together, we can create a more fun
and
full life for lesbians here in our beautiful desert
home.
Sincerely,
Marnie Hesson, Editor and Publisher
