Becoming a Person of Influence (an excerpt from our Life Success Program)
During Essential number eight in our Life Success program, we are learning the importance of networking and referrals in order to make life easier and more productive, resulting in less stress. If you stop and think about it, almost everything we do involves networking in some fashion. You can have a great deal of influence just because of the sheer amount of "networks" you are in. Stop and consider how many different groups you are a part of--your family, your work, your friends, your church, your industry, clubs you are a member of, sports teams you and/or your family participate in, your children's school and activities, etc.

Even though you may not be aware of it, you are also considered a part of someone else's network. There is value in that. You have the opportunity to influence any or all of these groups/networks you are part of. What kind of influence do you want to have in your networks? You can develop and/or improve your ability to influence others.

No matter what our profession is, whether in the corporate business world, as a parent and homemaker, or as a business owner, we can all benefit from knowing how to network. Networking touches many parts of our lives. Now onto Jim's lesson.

The three basic principles of influence according to Jim Rohn
(an excerpt from Networking and Referrals-the Eighth essential for Life Success)

Principle One: Character does indeed count.
I always find it interesting when there is a discussion on whether or not character matters in leadership. Of course it does! You simply cannot become a person of long-term influence if you lack good character.

Of course, the obvious questions are "What is character?", "What does it consist of?", "What are people looking for in character?"

Character is an issue of trust. People want to be able to trust you. They need to know that what you say is true. They need to know that when you say you will do something, you will.

What makes people trust others? Honesty. Do you tell the truth? Always? If you do, you will greatly enhance your ability to influence. People will listen when you speak. They will know that what they hear is what they get.

Honesty is being the same personally and professionally. You don't act one way in one situation and another way in a different situation. When people see you tell a "little white lie" in one situation, it is only natural that they will wonder if you are eventually going to tell them a "little white lie" as well.

If you want to influence others, first and foremost make sure that you are a person of character and integrity. This is a central issue of influence.

Principle Two: To influence, you must be great at what you do.
The last in the class is not usually the influencer, right? Right! Who is usually the influencer? The first in the class. People look up to those who produce the best results. People want to see that those they listen to have already achieved a certain level of success. So if you want to influence, develop a reputation for excellence. By continually sharpening your skills and knowledge, by improving your relationships and your finances, you will more easily position yourself to be an influencer in the lives of others.

Principle Three: Influence is based on helping others.
One of the most influential quotes in the arena of personal and professional development in the past fifty years has been my friend Zig Ziglar's quote about how you can achieve anything you want in life if you will help many others achieve what they want out of life. It has been so influential because of its innate truth.

It reminds me of Jesus' words, "Whoever wants to become the greatest among you must become the servant of all."

Amazing Member--Randy Gowin
Randy Gowin I was visiting relatives and once I saw the group shot photo I had realized I needed to do something about my weight. When I returned to work after I saw an e-mail that was sent out by the HR department about Studio 22 offering weight lifting and weight loss. I started weight lifting and had lost some weight but was not doing very well on my diet so I joined Thin&Healthy's Total Solution.

So many things have changed since I've been on the program.  I'm able to manage my stress better and the weight lifting helps with that too. I'm more outgoing and not such an introvert as I was before. I now have a girlfriend. I feel much better, my blood pressure is down and I have reduced my blood pressure medication. A couple of little things that I have noticed since losing my weight are that it's not a struggle to tie my shoes anymore and I don't tilt up the steering wheel to get out of a vehicle.

I have learned to manage my weight so I now know that if I do splurge I can adjust and not gain. I did this when I went I vacation and was not able to get exactly what was on my phase. When I went to Hawaii this year I weighed the same as I did before I left. Without Thin&Healthy I don't think I would have loss the weight or learned out to eat right and keep the weight off. I started at 221 lbs and am now 175 lbs. I went from a size 44 to a 34 and lost 41 inches!

Nutrition Hint--How Soft Drinks Can Make You GAIN Weight  By Lisa Andrews
People who drink diet sodas, or (as I call them) soft drinks have a very high chance of becoming overweight or even obese!

At the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio researchers found, during a 26 year study, that 622 participants aged 25-64 who drank diet soft drinks were more likely to be overweight.

According to the Associated Press, the chances of becoming overweight or obese increased by 65% with each and every diet drink per day.

Throughout the study, 32.7% of all those involved in the study, became either overweight or obese. And 47.2% of those who had 2 or more regular soft drinks a day became obese or overweight. But, the ones who drank 2 or more diet drinks a day, 57.1% became overweight or obese.

"Right now we don't have any clear public message here. This just raises an interesting question" says Sharon Fowler, the study's lead author at the University of Texas Health Science Center. She told the Houston Chronicle, "I want to be very clear our findings do not prove that diet soft drinks cause people to gain weight".

The researchers are baffled. Even though the diet drinks don't cause people to gain weight they replace that with what should be healthier drinks.

So what is this telling us? Do diet soft drinks make us gain weight? Well, the answer is no, not really! The idea behind this, and I guess the point of the study, is that when people drink a diet drink they tend to eat more or higher calorie foods. We seem to think that we can go ahead and eat that "super size fry" or that "triple cheeseburger" because, hey, I'm drinking a diet soda.

If you want to feel good about what you eat and drink then eat in moderation. Go ahead and have the diet drink, but eat sensibly along with it then you will see good results!
Metabolism Retraining Hint--Why Cardio Exercise Boosts Metabolism  By Andrew Bicknell
Your heart and your lungs are the engines that run your cardiovascular system. By strengthening them you increase that engines horsepower, making it run smoother and more efficiently. Simply, what this means is cardiovascular exercise boosts metabolism. Cardiovascular training increases stamina which will give you the type of energy that will keep you energized all day long.

Just like building the muscles of your body cardiovascular exercise has the same benefits for your heart and lungs. But unlike working the muscle fibers with a weight training routine you are working your heart and lungs, which respond to increased work just like any other muscles. You will increase their ability to pump oxygen rich blood to energy hungry cells throughout your body.

The best cardiovascular workouts should raise your heart rate to 70 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate and this should be sustained for a minimum of 20 minutes. This should be done at least 3 times a week with the more fit exercising closer to the upper percentage limit and beginners aiming for the lower percentile.

Aerobic exercise does more than boost your metabolism. Not only will you burn away excess fat at an efficient rate but the more fit you are cardiovascularly the less risk you have of having a heart attack or getting cardiovascular disease.

Just about any exercise that keeps your heart rate at the 70-85% of maximum rate will not only strengthen your heart and lungs but will also boost your metabolism into a fat burning machine. Bicycling, running, hiking, basketball will all give your heart and lungs a good workout. You can increase you're the aerobic output of your heart and lungs around 18 percent with a good aerobic workout regimen and while resistance training with weights will also increase cardiovascular output the increase is only around 6 percent.

This is not to say that only cardiovascular training is beneficial for a metabolism boost. Weight training has its place in an overall fitness program and if you combine those two forms of exercise with a healthy diet you can boost your metabolism far beyond what you could if you just concentrate on one aspect of living a healthy lifestyle.
