Tips for Thriving KidsThrive in 5
Talk together!

Talking with your toddler helps her expand her vocabulary and learn more complex sentence structures.  Talking together also develops her literacy skills as she is more comfortable and confident with language.  Talk as you: ride in the car, do errands together, make a meal, take a walk.  Research shows that talking with children during everyday routines increases their vocabularies.

What you can do:

Notice the number, size, shape and color of the things around you.  If you are at the supermarket, you can talk about the colors of different fruits, count out the apples as you put them in a bag, and notice that there are big fruits (like pineapple) and little fruits (like grapes).

Dorchester Flashback
Illustration of the WeekDorchester Illustration of the Day

Ray Bolger (January 101904 - January 151987) was an American entertainer of stage and screen, best known for his portrayal of the Scarecrow (and the farmworker "Huck") in the 1939 film classic, The Wizard of Oz.

Ray Bolger was born Raymond Wallace Bulcão to a Roman Catholic family of Portugueseand Irish extraction inDorchester, Massachusetts, a heavily Irish neighborhood at the time.

His father was a house-painter, his mother a homemaker. He was inspired by the vaudeville shows he attended when he was young to become an entertainer himself.  (Source: Wikipedia 2006)
