Dorchester Flashback

Dorchester Historical Society Image of the Week

Dorchester Illustration of the Day no. 1538

This photo is of the interior of 34 Alban Street. Notice the ornate furniture, framed pictures (including one on an easel), gas lamp fixture, and the draperies between the front room and the library.

Something not everyone may have noticed in the earlier interior photo were the two keyboard instruments--one in the hall and one in the parlor to the left of the statue of Mercury.  Doug Wynne got his brother Ed to comment:

Having peered through the dark Victorian furnishings here is my opinion (considered or not) about the two keyboard instruments in the picture. The one on the left is definitely a reed organ-- the give-a-way is the horizontal row of stops just above the keyboard. And if your eyesight is good and your imagination keen, you can just about make out the corner of one of the pump pedals under the bench. As for the instrument in the parlor, to the left of Mercury's statue, it presents a puzzle. Spinet pianos were invented and sold in the 1930s-- a little late for this era? All harpsichords, since their strings are plucked rather than struck, have by gravity's necessity their strings on a horizontal plane, so the harpsichord cases are wing-shaped, like a baby grand or concert grand pianos. The harpsichord was the keyboard instrument of choice in the 18th and early19th centuries, until it was eclipsed by the piano. I am not aware of any reed organs without stops. The studio piano is sort of a variation on a spinet, so the dating seems too modern for this picture. Given the very ornate carving of the leg support makes me want to lean in favor of another "one-lung" (i.e. a single set of reeds without stops) reed organ.
