Join Dorchester Bay EDC this Thursday as they share their great new projects to revitalize the Dorchester and Roxbury communities. The event will include a reception and program, in which DBEDC will honor Robert Quinn, former city official and mentor, highlighting his contributions and ongoing work. Come support Dorchester Bay in helping to build a strong, diverse, and thriving community in the neighborhoods of Dorchester & Roxbury.

Mother's Day Wildflower Walk at BNC

Wildflower WalkCome enjoy the spring flowers with your families and learn a little at the same time! Celebrate Mother's Day this year by taking a stroll with Boston Nature Center this Saturday at their Wildflower Walk. This introductory walk will touch on basic flower anatomy, the tools to identify flower families and the tricks flowers play to draw in insects. Erica Quigley, Teacher Naturalist, will lead the walk so get ready to know flowers, inside and out, by the end of the walk!

Getting HealthierGrove Hall Getting Healthier (aka GH2) presents an event where you can learn to have fun while maintaining a healthy lifestyle! Grove Hall Getting Healthier Day is for the whole family and will feature basketball tournaments, soccer & kickball games, Roxbury YMCA memberships, swimming lessons, dance performances, free HIV testing, health screenings, healthy grilled meals & lots more. Come out and discover all the healthy activities your community can offer for you this Saturday!

Room to Run  

Room to RunCome bring your two-legged and four-legged friends to Ronan Park this Saturday to help re-open the park for springtime and admire new improvements. Friends of Ronan Park invite you to "Room to Run," sponsored by Nutro. This is a chance for all dog owners and dog lovers to come together to help clean up and enjoy our community green spaces. Nutro will be giving away free samples, gifts, and prizes for all to enjoy.

Landless Garden Workshop   

DEHC WorkshopWant to grow a garden but don't think you have the space? Dorchester Environmental Health Coalition is hosting a workshop on how to construct a landless garden. You will leave with a free kit and all the knowledge you need to make your own garden! This urban gardening method uses vertical space on porches, stoops or outdoor spaces with sun to provide fresh food. All are invited to enjoy refreshments and help make your neighborhood a little more green!

Fashion Show at Elizabeth Seton Academy 

Seton Fashion ShowThe Elizabeth Seton Academy presents a night of the latest spring trends at a reasonable price! The Fashion Show will feature new fashions from Marshalls and other local designers. Elizabeth Seton Academy strives to provide an excellent and affordable education for young women, so come check them out this weekend! The event will also include hors d' oeuvres, performances, and prizes. What more could you ask for? 

Meetinghouse Benefit Restoration Dinner  

Restoration DinnerCommunity members are invited to the First Parish Church Gala to enjoy a catered dinner and full bar, take part in the silent auction and hear about the restoration plans. The Gala will feature the Guest Speaker and Honoree Clementina M. Chéry, Founder, President and CEO of the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute. There will be musical entertainment by Muse Stew and lots of other treats, don't miss out on this special occasion!

Walk for PeaceMothers, grandmothers, friends and all family members are invited to come together and participate in the 15th Annual Mothers' Day Walk for Peace! Let us walk to support families stricken by violence and the programs & services of the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute. There is no registration fee or fundraising minimum but all are encouraged to raise what they can.

Mayor Menino's Coffee Hours
Coffee HoursCome hang with the Mayor for Dunkin' Donuts coffee by the Byrne Playground and talk about issues that you want to address. Thomas Menino will be visiting local parks this spring season to speak to residents about community needs. All participants will enjoy coffee and breakfast treats provided by Dunkin' Donuts and families in attendance will receive a flowering plant grown in the city's greenhouses as a gift. Residents will also be eligible to win a "Day on the Town" raffle prize package including a Dunkin' Donuts gift basket, Macy's gift certificates, Swan Boat rides, and free parking.

Children Learning Training
CCCB WorkshopParents, teachers and other individuals interested in child care are invited to Child Care Choices of Boston for a training entitled, "Creative Curriculum: The Foundations." This course will cover children's social/emotional, physical, cognitive and linguistic development and learning. Other interesting topics of discussion will include the importance of research and classroom structure. Come check out this informative class at College Bound Dorchester, which will also be offered on May 18 in case you can't make it this week.

Help the Holmes School get Smartboards

Holmes School Pepsi Refresh ChallengeOne of the Dorchester FAMILY School Initiative partner schools, the Holmes School, just recently entered into the Pepsi Refresh Challenge. If they get enough votes they will receive a grant to have smartboards in the classrooms! Voting is open for the entire month of May and you can vote up to five times a day. You can sign in through Facebook and vote so why not start today?

Prom Dress Drive Having trouble finding an affordable dress for prom this year? Fear not, the Grove Hall Community Center is hosting its 3rd Annual Prom Drive! This drive is an opportunity for young women to attend their prom and look fabulous at the same time! Come by and select a dress on May 10, 24 and 31.

Today we have another from the series of 1880s photographs of 34 Alban Street.  This one shows the view from the carriage house back toward the main house.  The back end of the property was split off, and the carriage house became a 2-family house in 1921 numbered 25 Ocean Street.  Is that corn growing in the yard?
