Dorchester Historical Society Image of the Week

Dorchester Illustration of the Day no. 1527

The municipal building at Lower Mills was formerly the Blue Hill Bank building and later a private residence and studio.

The brick building at the corner of Richmond and Washington Streets, Dorchester, was at one time the Blue Hill Bank of Dorchester and later the police station and branch library.

The Dorchester and Milton Bank was chartered by the State, March 17, 1832, with $100,000 captial and with Moses Whitney as prsident. It was located in the Tolman Building on Washington Street. June 1, 1850, the vaults were robbed of $31,921. The name was changed to Blue Hill Bank, March 28, 1851. Asaph Churchill became president in October, 1853, and the name became The Blue Hill Bank of Dorchester. A national charter was granted October 3, 1864. A second robbery occurred in September, 1867, when $10,000 was taken and Mr. Bispham was gagged and bound.

In 1872, the Bank was moved to the brick building at the corner of Washington and Richmond Streets. E.J. Bispham became president and S.J. Willis cashier in 1876. The name was changed to The Blue Hill National Bank of Milton in 1882, when it was moved to Associates Building, Milton [not the same as Milton Savings Bank].

In 1882, the building at the corner of Richmond Street was sold to the City of Boston. Station 11 of the Police Department was for a long while located here, and the Lower Mills branch of the Boston Public Library operated from this building for many years.
It is now a private residence.
