Dorchester Flashback

Dorchester Historical Society Image of the Week
Dorchester Illustration of the Day no. 1436
The Dorchester Atheneum was located at the corner of Pleasant, Pond and Cottage Streets, where there is a playround now. The private subscription library was incorporated in 1857 and issued a catalog of books owned in 1857 and again 1870. The building once served as the Edward Everett School on Sumner but was moved to this site and remodeled soon after incorporation. By 1889 the atlases show that the building was no longer owned by the Atheneum, so we presume that the library was closed and its collections dispersed. Some of the most active in the library were John J. May, Ambrose H. White, Michael O'Barry, John G. Nazro, Amasa Pray and Ebenezer Clapp, Jr.

This increase in 'social capital' will result in a community that is safer, healthier and more vital. For more information click here.

The mission of DotWell is to work in collaboration with our founding health center partners - Codman Square Health Center and Dorchester House Multi-Service Center - to provide integrated clinical and community services that address health disparities, build social capital, and meet the complex needs of our communities.
