Dorchester Flashback

Dorchester Historical Society Image of the Week
Dorchester Illustration of the Day no. 1426
The photo this week is a room from the Gleason house, an ornate Gothic Revival house built in the 1840s on Claybourne Street, with Gothic spires, diamond-paned arched windows, and striking ornamentation on the interior. It had been built by Mary Bowker's great-grandfather Roswell Gleason, a successful metalsmith and entrepreneur.

When Bowker was nearing 90 and planning to move into a nursing home she asked the Museum of Fine Arts' curator of American decorative arts, Johnathan Fairbanks, to help her preserve this historic landmark in Fields Corner.

In 1977 the MFA decided to purchase two rooms, the parlor and the dining room. The Museum of Fine Arts has just opened its new wing, and one of the galleries is a reconstruction of the rooms from the Roswell Gleason house in Dorchester. We encourage you to check out the new wing at the MFA and support preservation of priceless historical pieces like the Gleason house!
