November's Business of the Month; Justice Café!

Justic Cafe

Justice Café is a new café that just opened up on August 25, 2010. Emorisson Williams is the owner of Justice (pictured on the right) and is very excited to be here promoting healthy eating in the community. The name fits the store, where Emorrison hopes to bring a sense of social 'justice' in a neighborhood that he saw a need for local food and businesses in. Justice Café has delicious fresh fuit smoothies and salads and sandwiches made with local produce!

Williams confessed to mainly opening Justice Café for the benefit of his son and daughter who he holds close to his heart, but also hopes to create more jobs for youth in the area as the business succeeds. He is also planning on getting Wifi up in the store by the end of the year. This new café is a win-win situation for everyone!

The key to this Justice Café is to keep everything fresh and local, which is why we chose Justice Café as our November 2010 Business of the Month.

Dorchester Flashback

Dorchester Illustration of the Day no. 1419Dorchester Historical Society Image of the Week
Funds for the Coppenhagen Fountain were donated to the City of Boston in 1911 in the will of Mehitable Calef Coppenhagen, who wanted to honor the memory of her parents and, by extension, all parents, with a suitable public memorial. She left $10,000 to the city, $5,000 of which was to be spent procuring a site and erecting a fountain--for persons and animals--to drink from.
The City engaged the sculptor Albert Henry Atkins to build the memorial. Bearing the inscription "In Memory of Beloved Parents," the memorial was located in Richardson Park, a wedge of land in Dorchester bordered by Pond and East Cottage Streets and Columbia Road.

After years of use, the fountain fell into neglect, and it was no longer on site by 1960. In 1979, it was located in Franklin Park, where vandals had left it in pieces. By 1992, it had been rebuilt and placed back in Richardson Park. It worked as a drinking fountain on and off again until a truck hit and badly damaged it. The fountain was again refurbished in 2004.
