Dorchester Flashback | |
Dorchester Illustration of the Day no. 1409
Earlier this week we saw the newly-constructed Mather School. Today's postcard affords a full view of the Old Mather School as the building on the right came to be known after the construction of the newer building. The Mather School, the oldest school in North America supported by direct taxation, is named for Richard Mather. Mather was an English clergyman who emigrated to Boston in 1635 and settled in Dorchester. Richard Mather contributed the preface and the versification of several psalms in The Bay Psalm Book which was the first book printed in the American Colonies.
Postcard. Caption on front: Dorchester, Mass. Mather School. Postmarked Oct 8, 1909. Grove Hall Station. With two cent stamp. On verso: The Hugh C. Leighton Co., Manufacturers, Portland, ME USA 27886. Made in Germany.
