Dorchester Flashback

Dorchester Illustration of the Day no. 1405
Dorchester Historical Society Image of the Week
Today's image is one-half of a stereo view card showing the Wilbar & Guild store in Neponset.

The photo shows the store sign Wilbar & Guild, Groceries & Provisions.  Note the brick sidewalk and the steps up into the store.  Behind the window at the left there seem to be baskets of potatoes and beans; behind the window to the right is an artful display of canned goods.  The men wear long coats, while the boys wear shorter jackets like the suit jackets for men today.

Probably from the 1860s or 70s.  The Dorchester and Quincy Directory for 1868-9 has a listing for a grocery store called Harding & Wilbar, grocer, Neponset Avenue corner Walnut.   Jason Wilbar one of the proprietors lived on Minot Street.
