 The Clapp Family Barn
Dorchester Historical Society Image of the Week

One of the last remaining barns in Boston, the Dorchester's Historical Society Clapp family barn stands as a symbols of the town's agricultural heritage. Dorchester's farm supplied food to Boston's population over a long history, notably during the occupation of the city by British troops at the start of the Revoluntionary War. The Clapp family's story can be followed from the settlement of Dorchester in 1630 from the subsistence farming to the development of extensive orchards made up of fruits that were hybridized on the estate. This barn is a physical artifact that serves to evoke history better than words could ever do.

The Society's goal is to stabilize the barn structure and save the resources it holds - the horse stalls, the hay loft, early 19th century farm implements, the Clapp family horse-drawn trap and many other wonderful examples of our agricultural heritage.

The Society has planned a gala fundraising dinner this Friday, September 24 to take place at the headquarters property at 195 Boston Street with all net proceeds going to barn repairs. Come support our local history and enjoy dinner, dancing, and special events in the shadow of the Clapp Family Barn. The Dorchester Historical Society needs your help to preserve this important part of our agricultural heritage.

Please visit the the DHS website if you would like to attend the gala and help out!
