| Dorchester Flashback | In 1635 Thomas Jones arrived in New England aboard the ship Abigail Hackwell. He settled in Dorchester and built a house at the foot of Jones Hill. David Clapp purchased 12 acres of land including the original house from Jones' heirs in 1755. He sold a portion of the land to Ebenezer Clapp, a distant cousin, in 1781, which later became the Thacher estate. David's remaining estate was divided among three sons: David, Samuel and Seth. Samuel received the land with the old Jones house and he and his family continued to live there until a fire destroyed the house in 1804. Samuel rebuilt on the same foundation, and his five-bay Federal style house still stands at 65 Pleasant.
The house descended to Samuel's son Samuel, then to Anna Clapp who married William Harris, a Boston printer. Their daughter Anna Harris lived at 65 Pleasant Street from her birth in 1843 until 1908. She married Huntington Smith who came to live in the house with her. Anna Harris Smith founded the Animal Rescue League in 1889.
The Illustration of the Day is sent out via email by Earl Taylor of the Dorchester Historical Society. If you would like to get these daily images, please visit this site to join the group. Questions? Call 781-272-6700. |
SCI Dorchester's mission is to strengthen the Dorchester community by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. We envision a community where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the destiny of our community. This increase in 'social capital' will result in a community that is safer, healthier and more vital. For more information click here.
The mission of DotWell is to work in collaboration with our founding health center partners - Codman Square Health Center and Dorchester House Multi-Service Center -
