| Dorchester Flashback | Now that all the gardens are blooming, it is time to mention once again that Dorchester has a wonderful agricultural/horticultural past. John Richardson purchased the house where Edward Everett was born in 1794 at the corner of Columbia Road and Boston Street and developed many varieties of peonies on the property. The house was built about 1745 by Robert Oliver, a wealthy planter from Antigua. The garden which is said to have been laid out by one of Olivers, was famous when in Mr. Richardson's possession for the many rare and choice flowers produced in it especially peonies. Richardson's seedling peonies ranking with the very best productions of their kind in the world. These are described in ... the Transactions of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society." Today's picture shows the Richardson gardens. The house was demolished in 1898.
The Illustration of the Day is sent out via email by Earl Taylor of the Dorchester Historical Society. If you would like to get these daily images, please visit this site and join the group. Questions? Call 781-272-6700. |
