| Dorchester Flashback | Dorchester Illustration of the Week
In 1846, a charter created the New York and Boston Railroad Company. The
plan was to build a railroad from New York to Boston. From the south the route would go to the
Rhode Island state line where the railroad would connect with the Woonsocket
Union line, linking with the Charles River railroad and ultimately into the city
of Boston. The cost of building the railroad, according to Johnson's
estimate, would be $2,565,000 or approximately $31,000 per mile. After many delays over many years, the
railroad from Boston to New York was completed but with many changes from the original
plan.
Today's illustration from 1854
shows the Air Line Road being constructed at the Boston end with the tracks
intending to stretch over the Roxbury flats in the South Bay to Dorchester in
the distance. From the caption: "The steam whistle and the thunder
of the arriving and departing trains echo from early dawn to evening and often
the citizen homeward bound in the middle of the night is startled by the hoarse
cough of the locomotive."
The Illustration of the Day is sent out via email by Earl Taylor of the Dorchester Historical Society. If you would like to get these daily images, please visit this site and join the group. Questions? Call 781-272-6700. |
