Book Talk with Jerald Walker

Jerald Walker

Come hear and meet Jerald Walker, author of Street Shadows: A Memoir of Race, Rebellion, and Redemption, at the Mattapan Branch Library (1350 Blue Hill Avenue). Street Shadows is a memoir about Jerald's life and the struggles he has faced.

Jerald states, "I was also aware that my story, in its most basic form, is everyone's. Once you move past the specifics of my experience--the drug and alcohol abuse, the petty crimes, the racial conflicts, the religious angst, etc.--what you are left with is a person who is on a universal quest to discover who he is and what his place is in the world."

St. Ambrose InteriorDorchester Illustration of the Week

Interior view of St. Ambrose Church, published in v. 5 of Metropolitan Boston: A Modern History. NY, 1929. Editor-in-Chief Albert P. Langtry

St. Ambrose's parish was created on December 7, 1914, from the southeastern part of St. Peter's territory with Father John H. Harrigan as pastor. The large Gothic Revival church was built in 1920 and was designed by W.H. McGinty, a resident of Percival Street. Located at 240 Adams Street, it was of red brick and granite and had two equal western towers.  The church suffered a fire in January, 1984, requiring the parishioners to rebuild."

The Illustration of the Day is sent out via email by Earl Taylor of the Dorchester Historical Society. If you would like to get these daily images, please visit this site and join the group. Questions? Call 781-272-6700.
SCI Dorchester's mission is to strengthen the Dorchester community by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. We envision a community where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the destiny of our community. This increase in 'social capital' will result in a community that is safer, healthier and more vital. For more information click here.

The mission of DotWell is to work in collaboration with our founding health center partners - Codman Square Health Center and Dorchester House Multi-Service Center - to provide integrated clinical and community services that address health disparities, build social capital, and meet the complex needs of our communities.
