Dorchester Illustration of the Week
The Ashmont Station of earlier years of rail travel is revealed in this scan of a photo published on a calendar issued by Cole's Pharmacy, 1876 Dorchester Avenue, corner Dracut St., Ashmont. " The calendar for 1901 states that the station was erected 1872, torn down 1895. It seems to be at the site that was later occupied by the Englewood Diner. The train at that time traveled in a gully. Later a cap was added so that the tracks are now in a tunnel." The Illustration of the Day is sent out via email by Earl Taylor of the Dorchester Historical Society. If you would like to get these daily images, please visit this site and join the group. Questions? Call 781-272-6700. |
