Dorchester Flashback
Illustration of the WeekDorchester Illustration of the Week

This week's illustration is a photo of the residence of Oliver Optic, the pseudonym of a prolific Dorchester writer.  William Taylor Adam's house, an elaborate towered Italianate mansion, stood where the ramps to the Field's Corner T Station are located today (1479 Dorchester Avenue).

"Oliver Optic lived on the west side of Dorchester Avenue at Field's Corner, on the first lot south of the railroad line.  William Adams, who lived a large part of his life in Dorchester, was the author of 126 books and over 1000 stories, issued mostly under the pseudonym of Oliver Optic and a few under other pseudonyms including Warren T. Ashton, Gayle Wintertown, Brooks McCormick, Irving Brown and Clingham Hunter, M.D."

The Illustration of the Day is sent out via email by Earl Taylor of the Dorchester Historical Society. If you would like to get these daily images, please visit this site and join the group. Questions? call 781-272-6700.
SCI Dorchester's mission is to strengthen the Dorchester community by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. We envision a community where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the destiny of our community. This increase in 'social capital' will result in a community that is safer, healthier and more vital. For more information click here.

The mission of DotWell is to work in collaboration with our founding health center partners - Codman Square Health Center and Dorchester House Multi-Service Center - to provide integrated clinical and community services that address health disparities, build social capital, and meet the complex needs of our communities.
