Dorchester Illustration of the WeekDorchester Illustration of the Week
This week's illustration is a photo of the first building used by the Third Church in Dorchester.

"The third church society in Dorchester was a Unitarian congregation that split off from Second Church in 1813. The Third Religious Society was formed as a result of a rupture between a portion of the congregation of the Second Church and their pastor, the Rev. Dr. Codman. The first meeting was held on May 6, 1813, in the Dorchester Reading Room, the back room of a barber shop which had been furnished as a reading room for the people in the vicinity of the end of Dorchester Avenue at Lower Mills. At a second meeting in August, the members called themselves "The Proprietors of the New South Meeting-House." The Second Church was known as the South Meeting-House, and the Third was now called "The New South." Its official name is The Third Religious Society in Dorchester."

The Illustration of the Day is brought to us by the Dorchester Atheneum, if you would like to be added to the list, please contact Earl Taylor by email or call 781-272-6700
SCI Dorchester's mission is to strengthen the Dorchester community by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. We envision a community where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the destiny of our community. This increase in 'social capital' will result in a community that is safer, healthier and more vital. For more information click here.

The mission of DotWell is to work in collaboration with our founding health center partners - Codman Square Health Center and Dorchester House Multi-Service Center - to provide integrated clinical and community services that address health disparities, build social capital, and meet the complex needs of our communities.
