Dorchester Illustration of the Week
Today's illustration is a postcard of Baker Memorial Church by J.V. Hartman. It may be Hartman's best postcard according to the Dorchester Atheneum. "The Baker Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church was located at the corner of Columbia Road and Cushing Avenue. Sarah Baker was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church near Lower Mills from early years until her death in 1866. Miss Baker conducted a band-box business for forty years, and when she had gathered $5,000, she invested the money. She left this investment in her will so that at the end of twenty years, the money would be given to the Methodist Church to build a new house of worship within three-fourths of a mile from her Savin Hill home. The money became available in 1886, at which time no church existed within the required limit. In 1899 the Trustees of the New England Conference asked the Mount Pleasant Methodist Episcopal Church on Howard Avenue, Roxbury, to disband and add the proceeds of the sale of its property to the Baker estate. The church was reorganized at Upham's Corner, and its first meetings were held in Winthrop Hall opposite the site of the proposed church. The site chosen was found to be nineteen feet outside the required limit, and special permission was obtained from the Court to use the Baker bequest. The money had grown to $22,642, and it contributed substantially to the construction of the Baker Memorial Church, which opened in June, 1891." The Illustration of the Day is brought to us by the Dorchester Atheneum, if you would like to be added to the list, please contact Earl Taylor by email or call 781-272-6700. |

Turn $10 into $1000 for Young Leaders
|
Please DONATE to help SCI win America's Giving Challenge through Causes on Facebook! Your $10 or more could help SCI win the daily challenge ($1,000) or possibly the overall challenge ($50,000). This contest is based on the number of individual donations received for our cause, Building Community Leaders, not the total amount of money received. Click on the following link and make a donation to help us win: http://apps.facebook.com/causes/367033
Your donation to this Cause will help SCI train 220 young leaders to collaborate effectively, make connections, bridge differences and nurture social networks to make a difference. With your help, these youth leaders will tackle issues they are passionate about such as hunger, teen violence, and the environment. |
SCI Dorchester's mission is to strengthen the Dorchester community by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. We envision a community where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the destiny of our community. This increase in 'social capital' will result in a community that is safer, healthier and more vital. For more information click here.
The mission of DotWell is to work in collaboration with our founding health center partners - Codman Square Health Center and Dorchester House Multi-Service Center -
to provide integrated clinical and community services that address
health disparities, build social capital, and meet the complex needs of
our communities.
