Dorchester Illustration of the Week
Today's illustration is a postcard of Meeting House Hill by J.V. Hartman. "Hartman's post cards are all a little other-worldly due to the crudeness of the production values. Can't you just see Meeting House Hill as the setting for a Halloween horror movie? The Mather School was replaced by a newer building that is out of sight behind the church. The Old Mather School building pictured here remained standing till mid 20th century as did Lyecum Hall on the right." The Illustration of the Day is brought to us by the Dorchester Atheneum, if you would like to be added to the list, please contact Earl Taylor by email or call 781-272-6700. |
| SCI Dorchester Welcomes New Americorps Members |
| As a way of introducing the new AmeriCorps members, each week we will be featuring a biography of a new member. Our featured new member this week is Keith Pernell.
Keith Pernell is happily joining us from Connecticut as a Youth Leadership Coordinator. Keith graduated from the University of Connecticut in the spring of 2009 with a B.A. in Sociology. He has served with youth for five years in various projects. He has also served for the Umass Boston Upward Bound Program, a college prep program, as a Resident Supervisor. Keith will be providing leadership training to a core group of youth who will organize projects to engage other peers in Community Service Learning. Although Keith has only worked in Boston for the past two summers he is excited to have the opportunity to help strengthen the community of Dorchester through civic engagement and community service. |
Turn $10 into $1000 for Young Leaders
|
Please DONATE to help SCI win America's Giving Challenge through Causes on Facebook! Your $10 or more could help SCI win the daily challenge ($1,000) or possibly the overall challenge ($50,000). This contest is based on the number of individual donations received for our cause, Building Community Leaders, not the total amount of money received. Click on the following link and make a donation to help us win: http://apps.facebook.com/causes/367033
Your donation to this Cause will help SCI train 220 young leaders to collaborate effectively, make connections, bridge differences and nurture social networks to make a difference. With your help, these youth leaders will tackle issues they are passionate about such as hunger, teen violence, and the environment. |
SCI Dorchester's mission is to strengthen the Dorchester community by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. We envision a community where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the destiny of our community. This increase in 'social capital' will result in a community that is safer, healthier and more vital. For more information click here.
The mission of DotWell is to work in collaboration with our founding health center partners - Codman Square Health Center and Dorchester House Multi-Service Center -
to provide integrated clinical and community services that address
health disparities, build social capital, and meet the complex needs of
our communities.
