Join a Community Art Committee
Boston Connects Inc is forming a Committee of 10 Community Artists to design a contest that would display local talent. In their quest to find talented individuals the Committee would be charged with creating an art contest that in turn will showcase the work of local artists from within the Empowerment Zone. This contest will result in a cash prize, with the second and third place winners receiving a smaller cash gift.

The work will involve 3 different meetings. If you would like more information or are interested in being involved, or would like to recommend or refer an artist from the Boston area to participate on the Community Art Committee, please contact Tory Stephens at 617.989.9181 or via email at tory.stephens.bci@cityofboston.gov.

Dorchester Flashback
Mather Elementary SchoolDorchester Illustration of the Week
Today's illustration is an illustration of the new Mather Elementary School built in the early 20th century.

"The new building was built in a U shape with a courtyard that faced the old school. After the construction of the new school in 1905, the old school building became known as the Southworth School. Joe Sergi wrote to say 'I transferred over to the Mather thru the 6th grade, and my sister was two years behind me and did the very same, Southworth to Mather. So my best recollection would be the Southworth was still standing in 1958-9.'"

The Mather Elementary School on Meeting House Hill will celebrate the unveiling of their new library on October 9th, a week from Friday. Join them from 12 noon to 3 pm. They will give tours and provide entertainment.

The Illustration of the Day is brought to us by the Dorchester Atheneum, if you would like to be added to the list, please contact Earl Taylor by email or call 781-272-6700.

SCI Dorchester Welcomes New Americorps Members
As a way of introducing the new AmeriCorps members, each week we will be featuring a biography of a new member. Our featured new member this week is Maggie Casey.

Maggie Casey is excited about developing the an Arts and Multi-Media program for Dorchester House Multi-Service Center that is both fun and enriching for teen participants. Maggie is originally from Santa Monica, California, but recently graduated from Oberlin College with a Comparative American Studies major and a minor in Studio Art. As an Oberlin student Maggie was actively involved in youth development programs such as America Reads and Oberlin Street Law. Last summer Maggie worked as a Youth Team Leader for the C5 New England Leadership Camp. She is happy to be in Dorchester working with youth, art and service, and will gladly tell you about the different programs offered at the Teen Center if you send her an e-mail or stop by Dorchester House.

SCI Dorchester's mission is to strengthen the Dorchester community by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. We envision a community where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the destiny of our community. This increase in 'social capital' will result in a community that is safer, healthier and more vital. For more information click here.
