IIT Student Start-up Wins Several Awards eMotion™,
a student initiated company at IIT, is well on its way to commercialization
with the help of the Jules
F. Knapp
Entrepreneurship Center and other advisors from IIT and
the entrepreneurial community.
Co-founded
by Avelo Roy, an undergraduate computer engineering major, and Ed Suda, an
undergraduate architecture major, eMotion aims to create and offer devices that
wirelessly connect people who are physically separated but emotionally
together.
eMotion's
first product is the BFF<3™ Necklace, a fashion accessory, wireless
communicating device and secure gateway to a social networking website. The
initial target market for the BFF<3 Necklace is girls aged 8-14 years,
providing them with the means to send each other secret, encoded messages.
A
few highlights from eMotion's series of achievements in 2008 include winning the regional Idea to Product (I2P) competition, being a finalist in the Nascent 500, and being selected to present at the Midwest Venture Summit.
When
asked about eMotion's success, Avelo replied that it is due to a very dedicated
team and a knowledgeable group of advisors. Moreover he and Ed have both been active as student leaders at IIT, and this
experience has helped them tremendously in managing eMotion.
Meet
Avelo and Ed to learn more about eMotion at the next Knapp Center Monthly Entrepreneurship
Social on Thursday, June 26th, where they will be one of our
featured guests. More details about the
Social are listed below.

Knapp Center Lecture: Intellectual Property Law for Entrepreneurs
Join the Knapp Center for its June lecture, which will be presented by Steve Parmelee, an Intellectual Property attorney with Fitch Even Tabin & Flannery. His presentation will present an overview of the four main areas of
intellectual property law practice (patents, copyrights, trade secrets, and
trademarks) as conveyed within the context of a single vignette that details the
legal adventures (and misadventures) of a single entrepreneur.
The technical and
business context of this vignette is suitable for audiences of all
backgrounds, while also serving as a concrete basis for explaining how these
different intellectual property rights apply, don't apply, or apply in
overlapping ways as the events of the story progress.
Mr. Parmelee's presentation will be insightful, balanced, and infused with just enough humor to hold the attention
of the audience.
Refreshments will be served. There is absolutely no charge for this event, but RSVPs are required and should be made to keplinger@iit.edu.

ITDA 2008 Federal Funding Seminar The Illinois Technology Development
Association's annual Federal Financing Seminar provides detailed information
about NASA and Department of Defense (DoD) programs, including the Small
Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer
(STTR) programs, Broad Agency Announcements (BAA), and NASA Space Act Agreements.
We increase the federal research and
development dollars that flow into this region by ensuring that area companies
with a technology or product that could be of interest to federal agencies
understand how to efficiently navigate the process to obtain grants or
technology development contracts.
These seminars do more than educate. We
introduce local businesses - both small and more established - to NASA and DoD
personnel, as well as leaders from other regional companies with the potential
to partner on projects.
Online registration is $40 before June 16th and $60 on the day of the event. CLICK HERE TO REGISTER ONLINE.

IL-Celerate The IL-Celerate program provides money, resources and mentoring to Illinois-based technology companies.
The IL-Celerate Program will sponsor five "seed stage" companies
through a twelve-week program. At the end of the program, each of the
companies will have a completed prototype-stage product, exposure to
potential investors and networking across the Illinois technology
community for continued growth.
The program will:
- Provide an avenue of development for very early stage ideas within Illinois
- Develop a deeper relationship for young entrepreneurs with current technology executives/mentors, and
- Develop a stronger network among technology executives within Illinois
Developed by the Illinois Technology Association (ITA) and the
Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce (CEC) in association with the Illinois
Department of Commerce and Economic Activity (DCEO), the IL-Celerate
program is available to any resident of the State of Illinois.
A
business plan is not necessary for the application. Partial selection
criteria will include the market potential for the idea and the
strength of the founding management team.
The deadline for applications is June 20, 2008. The IL-Celerate application can be found here.
