Traditional Water Gilding 3-Day Workshop

Washington State Convention Center
gilding class

Thank you to those of you who have expressed interest in attending a gold leaf gilding workshop. It's wonderful to hear from so many people from across the country interested in the gilding arts, many who are artists themselves who would like to explore this craft more fully for use in their own work or simply to uncover some of the mysteries of this beautiful craft.

I am currently planning a three-day workshop in Traditional Water Gilding at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, WA. The dates will be announced within the next week or two and because of your expressed interest I wish to give you advance notice of these plans before general announcement. I hope to choose the appropriate room at the convention center shortly and I expect a workshop date to be either the end of October or early November.

As shown on my website at www.gildingstudio.com, the water gilding workshop has been expanded to a Three Day class. The cost of the class is $650.00. Students will be taken through each step of the water gilding process including:

  • Sizing preparation for a raw wood surface for use on such wooden objects as picture frames, architectural elements, and furniture
  • Gesso and Clay Bole preparation and application
  • Sanding gesso
  • Gilding with genuine 23k gold leaf
  • Burnishing
  • Sealing the gilded surface
  • Toning treatments for effects such as antiquing
The workshop fee includes:
  • Use of all tools and materials
  • 1 book of 23k gold leaf
  • A picture frame for each student to gild and take home
  • A class booklet of gilding recipes for size, gesso, and clay bole, a summary of the water gilding process for reference, information for the society of gilders, and a bibliography of books for further study
  • Admission to the Seattle Art Museum, located nearby to the convention center for a class trip to view the Italian water gilded frame collection.
A confirmed date will be announced in the next e-newsletter installment before it is posted on the Gilding Studio website. Class size is limited to twelve (12) students. Please feel free to write or call before then if you have any questions.

Again, thank you for your interest and I hope to have the opportunity of working with you this Fall!

Best regards,

Charles Douglas

The Traditional Water Gilding Method

What is it and how is it done?
Water Gilding a Frame

Gold leaf gilding is both a craft and an art, a process of adornment with its earliest origins dating to approximately 2,300 BC. The method of traditional water gilding is a multi-step process intended for use on wood, can be burnished to a brilliant lustre and is considered by many to be the most beautiful form of gilding.

During the upcoming issues of the Gilding Arts e-Newsletter traditional water gilding will be discussed step-by-step. As experienced in the 3-day water gilding workshop, these steps include sizing the wood, gesso, clay bole, burnishing, sealing, and toning as well as some of the little tricks along the way!
