The Hurricane of 1939: footage from our video archive.
Hurricane of 1939

Summer is in full swing and in many places that also means the start of hurricane season. Fortunately, in Newport Beach we normally do not have to worry about these tropical storms however in 1939, during one unseasonably warm summer, the unthinkable happened, there was a hurricane that blew into Newport Harbor. In this short documentary, actual footage of the Hurricane that blew into the Newport Harbor was captured by an amateur photographer recording on 16 mm film.  The video also shows two heroic local surfers rescuing passengers from a capsized boat.

International Surfing Day

June 20 is International Surfing Day which celebrates the sport and culture of surfing. A sport native to the Hawaiian islands, surfing has become an international phenomenon on coastal cities across the globe ( and even cities on lakes like the Great Lakes!).
Surfing in Southern California is much more than a sport; it is a lifestyle with its own music, fashion and attitude.  Here, in Newport Beach surfers have come to recognize the Wedge as one of the great hot-spots for good swells and great waves.  Embrace our local surf culture by visiting the Sea of Adventure gallery and learning about early surfing in Newport or learn the physics behind waves and check out our  educational video, 'The Wedge'.
