Welcome Back!

After a brief hiatus we are re-launching Currents, our e-newsletter to connect with our friends and community on our latest in programming, events, exhibits and our plans for the future.  Since the opening of our Preview Center in October, we have been busy getting the word out about our exciting vision for the future of the organization through an ambitious community outreach campaign.  I've personally presented at dozens of community and civic meetings in and around Newport Beach eager to listen to feedback on our plans.  If you haven't seen it yet please watch the video of our plans and share your thoughts with us by emailing us at info@nhnm.org or click reply to this email.

We are also excited about our new educational initiatives and full program line-up  on horizon including:

Chris Welsh's Submarine for the Five Dives ExpeditionFrom Around the Oceanic Community:
Update: Five Dives Expedition

As the exclusive Southern California Educational Partner of the Five Dives Expedition, we are happy to bring  you an update on local adventurer Chris Welsh as he prepares for his journey to the deepest depth on Earth along with partner Sir Richard Branson as part of the Five Dives Expedition.  As many of you know film director, James Cameron touched down in the Marianas Trench on March 28, 2012, making him one of the few people ever who have reached 'full ocean depth'.

Chris congratulated Cameron and his team and even shared that the two teams have been working together on scientific and technological innovation and plan to continue their relationship in the spirit of ocean exploration.  As Chris explained on the Virgin Oceanic website, "The Virgin sub is excellent for large scale exploration and identifying areas worthy of more detailed examination, and Jim's sub is perfect for detailed examination of those sites once found.  We can achieve more through collaboration than just the sum of our efforts".

This does not deter Virgin Oceanic's Five Dives Expedition and they are still on course for their dive after further testing is done on the quartz dome that makes up the top of the sub.

The RMS Titanic
The Sinking of the R.M.S.Titanic: 100 Years Later
The lessons and legacy of a tragedy
On April 15, 1912 the unsinkable R.M.S. Titanic, the largest passenger liner afloat at the time, made a fateful collision with an iceberg on her maiden voyage and sank in the North Atlantic loosing 1,514 of the 2,223 people she carried. On the centennial anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, the deadliest maritime disaster in peacetime, we reflect on the tragedy and how it forever changed the way we boat and think about safety and the sea.  In direct response to the tragedy, Britain and the United States founded the International Convention of Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) which still governs maritime safety regulations today including the mandatory enforcement of emergency drills for passengers and crew and enough life boats to accommodate all passengers on board.
