July/August  2012
Greetings!

Every summer I ask myself, "So just why do you continue to live in North Texas?" The answer is always something like: "Because you can't afford a summer house in Vancouver or Seattle." So if you find it difficult to get out in this heat to practice yoga, I sympathize. But as always, at Bright Path Yoga, we don't practice "hot yoga," and you'll often find us enjoying Yumilicious after class - a wonderful cool treat! So don't give up your practice just because it's hot. The weather's perfect for yoga!

Yoga -- Kids Get It!
Warrior II

And so does the educational community. There's a growing interest for putting yoga in schools.
Kids reap the same benefits you do, but there's more. Yoga helps kids come inside and experience a reality separate from their sometimes over-scheduled lives. "Yoga provides a fun way for kids to learn how their bodies work, and perhaps more importantly, how their body and brain work together," says Linda King, a registered yoga teacher and middle school science teacher. "I've seen children use deep breathing and balance poses that they learned several years previously, to help them focus before a big test or presentation. Yoga provides life-skills that can be used on or off the mat for the rest of their lives."

Linda recently conducted kids' yoga camps for different age groups at St. John's Episcopal School in Dallas. Janet Hennard assisted her with one camp of 12 kids around six to eight years old. Oh, they were great at mountain, cobra, lion, down dog, triangle and warrior. But want to know one of their favorite poses? A simple guided savasana, accompanied by a nice lavender oil massage at the temples!  See more photos of the kids at yoga camp. And don't forget to ask Linda about another kids' yoga favorite -- the lonely mountain story!
Mango-Lime Sorbet -- So Easy!
Mango-Lime Sorbet

This delicious chiller from Vegetarian Times has only 3 ingredients. It's so easy, we make it often in the summer!
  • 4 cups frozen mango chunks
  • 1/2 cup agave nectar
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice

Thaw mango chunks 15 minutes. Place in blender or food processor, and purée with agave nectar and lime juice. Transfer to shallow glass or metal bowl, and place in freezer. Freeze 30 minutes. Stir purée every 15 minutes until ready to serve.

My Yoga Story: Jean Webb

How long have you been practicing yoga?

My yoga practice began about 6 or 7 years ago. Curiosity and friendship brought me to class.

What was your first introduction to yoga like?

In the beginning of my yoga practice, I had mixed emotions about whether I liked the different positions. They felt awkward to me, especially the aspect of letting go in savasana. The very first class gave me some release of stress. Bottled emotions poured out in the form of silent tears. I embraced the mental clarity and stillness. I knew I had to continue for my emotional health.

What are the main benefits you have enjoyed from practicing yoga?

Breathing exercises benefit me. Prior to learning the correct techniques, my pattern was shallow breathing. Increased oxygen flow has resulted in better focus, positive thoughts and more energy. I used this form of life force to successfully enhance and direct a healing energy during recent surgeries.

What is your favorite part of a yoga class or favorite pose?

Balancing poses are my favorite. That is the area where I have more immediate success.

Why do you practice at Bright Path Yoga?

Bright Path Classes are comfortable, flexible and professionally conducted. My instructor is always introducing a variety of activities which keeps my interest high. The tools she provides are allowing me to ride the wave and storms in my daily life.
