Possible Change to FCPS Sports Teams

From the VaPTA--The House of Delegates is moving to allow non-public school students to play on high school teams across the state. VaPTA has been fighting this bill for a few years now - but it has gained serious momentum in the recent few days.

What you need to know: HB 947 will allow non-public school students to play on public school teams; Participation on athletic teams is a privilege that should be reserved for the public school students;Non-public school students only have to meet SIX eligibility requirements to the public athlete's 13 requirements. What's next?  Drama, debate, electives?

If you are interested, click here http://capwiz.com/npta2/va/issues/alert/?alertid=60856056&PROCESS=Take+Action  for a pre-written letter to the members of the House Education committee. This legislation goes to vote on February 1.  Questions? Please contact legislation@vapta.org.

Checks can be mailed to:  Langley Boosters Club,  PO Box 794,  Great Falls, VA  22066 .

Upcoming Community Events

Did you know that February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month?   According to the 2009 Fairfax  County Youth Survey, 25% of teens in Fairfax County report being the victim of some form of dating abuse.  Nationally, eighty one percent of parents believe teen dating violence is not an issue of admit they don't know if it's an issue.  This past week at a press event in McLean, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova and Dranesville Supervisor John Foust issued jointly a proclamation declaring February "Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month in McLean, Virginia.  On February 1st, the Safe Community Coalition in partnership with McLean High School PTSA, Langley High School PTSA, The Madeira School and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology PTSA will be kicking off this important awareness campaign.  Student leaders will be putting up posters and fliers, making morning announcements about this issue and on Thursday, Feb 9th, joining the entire McLean community in a "PURPLE OUT" in recognition of teen dating violence awareness and healthy relationships.   As students hand out purple ribbons and purple heart stickers, we hope everyone will join us in wearing purple on February 9th and attending "What's Love Got to Do With It?:  Healthy Relationships and Dating" that evening at 7 pm at McLean High School.

As always, the PTSA thanks you for your ongoing support of your child's education and experience at Langley!  Your volunteer hours, resources, and dedication are very appreciated!
