Fall 2013 EPA Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowships for Undergraduates:
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Center for Environmental Research (NCER), invites applications for the Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowships for undergraduate environmentally-related study for bachelor's level students. The closing date is December 5, 2012. Subject to availability of funding, the quality of applications received and other applicable considerations, the Agency plans to award approximately 40 new fellowships in the summer of 2013. The fellowship provides up to $20,700 per year of academic support and $8,600 for internship support for a combined total of up to $50,000 over the life of the fellowship. The GRO program enhances and supports quality environmental education for undergraduates, and thereby encourages them to continue their education beyond the baccalaureate level, and pursue careers in environmentally-related fields, such as biology, health, the social sciences, and engineering. The actual amount awarded per year will vary depending on the amount of tuition and fees and the number of months the stipend is required. This fellowship is intended to help defray costs associated with environmentally-oriented study leading to a bachelor's degree. See the GRO Fellowships for Undergraduate Environmental Study website for more information.

FE Exam Information...

Take to first step toward professional licensure - apply for the April 2013 Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination by January 1, 2013. Seniors who are within two semesters of graduating may apply for the FE exam, which is the national examination from the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). You must register with South Dakota Board of Technical Professions online at: https://apps.sd.gov/applications/ld17btp/Applications/secure/forms/BTPFEApplication.asp.

The CEE department strongly encourages you take this exam as soon as you are eligible, as it is the first step toward professional licensure. Passing the FE exam is an important milestone that will increase your career opportunities. There will be general and civil engineering specific review sessions offered in this fall and next spring. To purchase a general review or civil engineering topics review manual, contact the ASCE student chapter: asce@mines.sdsmt.edu.

For more information about licensure in South Dakota, see http://dlr.sd.gov/bdcomm/btp/engineers.aspx.

For more information about the FE exam, see http://www.ncees.org/Exams/FE_exam.php.

Please note that the CEE department does not require students to take the FE exam to graduate, but don't limit your opportunities by neglecting to take this exam! It becomes significantly more difficult to pass this exam after you graduate.

Note from Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe

Bridge is off to a great start this year.  There are currently 25 active members on the team. The team is taking advantage of our free time in the fall and took a hike up to the Stratabowl as well as fabricating little things to get ready for the bridge itself.  We plan on discussing some more about safety and current designs.  Our goal for October is to make and test connections, and narrow down our design ideas to two general designs that we can further develop.

The concrete canoe team has 20 active members.  This year we are splitting up the work and forming subcommittees such as hull design, mix design, aesthetics, and fundraising to be more efficient. We hope that this organization will allow us to pour the concrete by the end of December.  We are practicing paddling every Thursday and Saturday working on turning to make more effective paddlers. Our goals for October include:  test first concrete test specimens, develop an understanding for hull design software, form teams for each paddling race, and start fundraising.  What to join? e-mail us at asce@mines.sdsmt.edu.

Alumnus Larry Schmaltz's Presentation on the North Dakota Oil Boom
The ASCE student chapter, CEE and Geology and Geological Engineering Departments had a joint meeting with a presentation about the North Dakota Oil Production given by CEE alumnus Larry G. Schmaltz, PE. He discussed the history of oil production in the United States, and how production has progressively increased throughout the years. North Dakota's oil fields had a 16,667% increase in oil production from 2008 to 2011 and is likely to continue to drastically increase for the next couple of years. The challenges that lie ahead are those of population growth, resource development, and infrastructure. Engineers are going to be needed in the near future to help design and construct new roadway systems, housing, commercial/industry, water/waste water facilities, and systems to take care of the environmental impact caused from this sudden oil boom. The American ingenuity is the United States greatest resource and with multiple job opportunities opening from the oil boom in North Dakota there will be an abundant amount of jobs for CEE students that wish to stay in this area.
